      • svchost.exe — Generic Host Process for Windows Services (These are system services required by Windows.)
      • lsass.exe — Local Security Authentication Server (This is how you connect to your network.)

Personal Firewall may be confused with the status of your network. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and have them remove all of your Dial-up Networking, Dial-up and TCP/IP Adapters and rebuild your Internet connection.

Note: You may notice increased performance in your connection as a result of this.

Be sure to completely uninstall Personal Firewall and, if installed, McAfee Privacy Service before calling your ISP. Once you have your network reconfigured, reinstall Personal Firewall.

  1. Right-click the M icon by your system clock.
  2. Click Personal Firewall.
  3. Click Internet Applications.
  4. Scroll through the list of applications and verify that your email program (e.g. Outlook, Outlook Express, and Eudora) has full access to the Internet.

What if I Receive an Error During Registration?

The following are common registration error messages:

  • Cannot complete registration when installing a Symantec product

The registration process that occurs during the installation of your Symantec product requires that you have Internet access. If you do not have Internet access during the installation, then the registration will not complete.

NOTE: Some Symantec products require that you regularly update your subscription or that you apply a license in order to allow more than one person to use the product. These subjects are not the same as registration. For information on those subjects, consult your Symantec product's Manuals or search the knowledge base for your Symantec product for "subscriptions" or "licensing."

    To register the product:

    1. Finish installing the product:
      • During installation, if you see an option such as OK, Continue, or Next, which allows you to continue with the installation, continue with the installation.
      • If you cannot continue with the installation, quit the installation. Restart the installation, and then click Skip to bypass the registration process.
    2. Register the product:

  • Cannot register your product over the Internet

You are trying to register a Symantec product that uses the Internet to connect and you see the following error messages:
    • "Unable to Establish Connection over SSL"
    • "Unable to Connect"

      Solution:
You may need to adjust your Internet settings. For the registration program to work normally, your Internet security settings must be set to Low. To check and adjust these settings, please do the following:

      1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
      2. Double-click Internet Options. The Internet Properties dialog box appears.
      3. Click the Security tab. You will see four icons related to security.
      4. Select an icon, and lower the security-level bar to the lowest setting. Do this for all four icons, and then click Apply when done.

Note: You will receive warnings similar to the following when you make these changes. Click Yes to change the security level.

      5. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Restore Defaults.
      6. Click OK to close Internet Properties. If you are prompted to restart Windows, please do so.

You can now register your Symantec software as follows:
      1. Connect to the Internet.
      2. Start your Symantec program.
      3. Click Help, and then click About.
      4. Click the General tab, and then click Register.
        The Registration Wizard screen appears.
      5. Follow the prompts to register your product with Symantec.

If you still cannot register your program, there may be a third-party program, such as InterMute or other content filtering program, interfering with your Internet connection. Temporarily disable the program, and try again to register the program.

If you have problems disabling the third-party software, follow the steps outlined in the Symantec document, "Closing all programs".External link

If this still fails to resolve the problem, uninstall your Symantec product. Disable the third-party application, connect to the Internet, and reinstall the Symantec product while you are still connected. This should remove any interference from third-party programs and allow the registration to continue normally.

Note: When you change your Internet security settings to Low, you decrease the level of security on your computer. This is necessary and normal. The higher a security level is set, the less you can do with your computer. This trade-off between security and function happens because a higher security level, by design, restricts more activity on your computer more than a lower security level does. LiveUpdate requires a Low security setting in order to perform normal and expected functions. If you want to improve the security on your computer, you may use a Low setting temporarily to run LiveUpdate, and then change the setting to Medium or High when LiveUpdate is done.

  • I Have a Missing or Invalid Product Key

    • How does activation work?
Product activation links a computer hardware identifier that represents your computer with a unique product key or activation key that is assigned to each copy of the program. That information is then stored on a Symantec server-- without any of your personal information.

    • What is a product key or activation key?
Product keys and activation keys are codes used to activate a program.

A product key is a unique number and letter combination code assigned to each CD copy of the program. An activation key is letter combination code assigned to a downloaded product. You may see the terms "product key" and "activation key" used interchangeably.

    • Where is my product key or activation key?
The product key is located on the back of the CD envelope that came with your computer. If your CD envelope does not have a product key, contact Symantec customer support.External link

Once you have installed your Norton product, you can locate your product or activation key by following these steps:
      1. Start your Norton program.
      2. Click Help & Support in the upper-right corner of the window.
      3. Click About Norton <product name >, which is the last item on the menu.
      4. In the About <program name > dialog box, click the tab for your product name.
      5. The product key is located in the Product Key field.

How Do I Remove a Virus or Spyware? If Norton AntiVirus is already installed on your computer and you suspect or know that the computer is infected with a virus, configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files, restart the computer in Safe Mode, and run the virus scan. This process removes most viruses.

When done, restart the computer in normal mode and run the Norton AntiVirus scan again. If Norton AntiVirus still detects the virus, read the "When you cannot remove a virus" section below for instructions on how to fully remove the virus.

  • When you cannot remove a virus
In most cases in which an antivirus program cannot remove a virus, the problem is because the virus itself is interfering with the removal process, or the virus is new and the computer does not yet have updated information for removing that particular virus. For both situations, use the following instructions to fully remove the virus.

  • To remove the virus:

    1. Configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files.
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
    3. Run the Norton AntiVirus scan and have it repair the virus. Make a note of the name of the virus.
    4. To determine whether Symantec has additional instructions for removing the virus, search Symantec's online list of known virusesExternal link for the name of the virus and click the virus name. If this step opens a new page, instructions for removing the virus are usually in a section called "removal instructions" near the end of the document.

      • If clicking the virus name does not open an instructions page, Symantec does not have additional instructions for removing this virus. Continue with step 5.

      • If clicking the virus name opens an instructions page, look for an attached file on that page:
        • If you find an attached file, the file is a removal tool for this virus. Download the file and run it to complete the virus removal. The instructions for running the file are included on the instructions page. After running the file, continue with step 5.
        • If you do not find an attached file, follow the instructions on the instructions page to complete the virus removal. Continue with step 5.

    5. Restart the computer in Normal mode and run Norton AntiVirus to ensure that no more viruses are reported.
