Ink Cartridge Troubleshooting for the Dell V525w and V725w Inkjet Printers

 Note:
BEFORE YOU TROUBLESHOOT: Make sure your printer has the latest Dell firmware installed. Go to Start, Programs, Dell Printers, and choose your printer model. Click on Product Update and click Check Now. You may set the software to check for updates on a regular basis


 


Issue 1:


   Installing the Printhead and Ink Cartridges  


To install the printhead and ink cartridges in the printer:
  1. Plug the printer in and turn it on.

  2. Open the printer by lifting the lid (Figure 1)(below the scanner cover).

  3. Make sure the jam clearance cover is removed.

  4. Press the release tab and open the printhead carrier.

  5. Remove the ink cartridges from the package and then twist and remove the protective cap from the ink cartridges (Figure 2).

  6. Starting with the three color cartridges, insert each cartridge and press firmly on the far end until the cartridge clicks into place (Figure 3).

  7. Close the printhead carrier latch, replace the jam clearance cover, and then close the printer.

Issue 2:


   Checking Ink Levels  


To check the ink levels:
  1. On the printer menu, select Setup, Maintenance, then Check Ink Levels.


    OR

  2. In the Windows operating system, click Start, All Programs or Programs, and navigate to Printer Home. Select your printer then click the Maintenance tab and Supplies Status.

  3. In the Macintosh operating system, from the Apple menu navigate to System preferences, Print & Fax, and then select the printer. Click Options & Supplies or Print Queue then click Supply levels.

Issue 3:


   Aligning the Printhead  


If the characters or lines on the printed page appear jagged or wavy, then you may need to align the printhead.
  1. Load plain paper in the printer.

  2. From the printer control panel, navigate to Setup, Maintenance, Align Printer. The printer will print an alignment page.

    Note:  
      Do not remove the alignment page until printing is finished. The page may go in and out of the printer multiple times during printing.



  3. Print the document again. If the problem has not been corrected, you may need to clean the printhead nozzles.

Issue 4:


   Cleaning the Printhead Nozzles  

If you have not used the printer for a long period, it may be necessary to clean the printhead nozzels to improve print quality. Keep the printer plugged in to a properly grounded, working electrical outlet to allow it to perform automatic maintenance cycles.


Note:  
 
  • Cleaning the printhead nozzles uses ink so clean them only when necessary.
  • Deep cleaning uses more ink, so try the Clean Printhead option first to save ink.
  • If the ink levels are too low, you must replace the ink cartridges before you can clean the printhead nozzles.
  1. Load plain paper in the printer.

  2. From the printer control panel, navigate to Setup, then Maintenance.

  3. Press the up or down arrow button to scroll to Clean Printhead or Deep Clean Printhead, then press OK.

  4. The printer will print a cleaning page.

Issue 5:


   Ink Cartridge Error Messages  


The following errors are associated with the four ink cartridges in the printer:
  • Ink Cartridge Error: The printer is unable to authenticate one or more of the installed ink cartridges.
    1. Press to cancel the current print job.
    2. Make sure the specified ink cartridge is removed and installed properly.
    3. Turn the printer off, wait about 10 seconds, and then turn the printer back on.
      Note:  
        Make sure the printer is not in Sleep mode. Press and hold the power button for three seconds to turn off the printer.
       


  • Ink Cartridge Missing: The printer cannot detect one or more of the ink cartridges.
    1. Install the specified missing ink cartridge or cartridges.
    2. If they appear to be installed, remove and reinstall the specified ink cartridge or cartridges.
    3. Press OK or  to clear the message.
    4. See the User's Guide for a list of supported ink cartridges.


  • Ink Cartridge Unsupported: The cartridge is not recognized as a valid, supported ink cartridge.
    1. Replace the unrecognized ink cartridge with one that is supported by your printer.
    2. Press OK or  to clear the message.
    3. See the User's Guide for a list of supported ink cartridges.


  • Ink Low: One or more ink cartridges is reporting low ink levels.
    1. Press OK or to clear the message and continue printing.

      Note:  
        Depending on your printer settings, you may not be allowed to continue printing until you replace the specified cartridge.

Issue 6:


   Printhead Error Messages  


The following errors are associated with the printhead in the printer:
  • Printhead Error 1:
  •  Note:
    Remove the ink cartridges if installed, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Removing and Reinserting (Reseat) the Ink Cartridges.
    If this message appears at the initial or Out Of the Box (OOB) install:
    1. Remove and reseat the Printhead, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Removing and Reinserting (Reseat) the Printhead.
    2. If the issue persist, Contact Technical Support.

    When this message appears after the printer has been in use:
    1. Remove the Printhead and wipe the contacts on the printer and Printhead, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Removing and Reinserting (Reseat) the Printhead and Resolving Printhead Errors by Cleaning the Printhead.
    2. Reseat the Printhead.
    3. If the issue persist, Contact Technical Support.



  • Printhead Error 2:
  •  Note:
    The ink cartridges need to be installed to troubleshoot this error.
    If this message appears at the initial or Out Of the Box (OOB) install:
    1. Leaving the ink cartridges installed, remove and reseat the Printhead, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Removing and Reinserting (Reseat) the Printhead.
    2. If the issue persist, Contact Technical Support.

    When this message appears after the printer has been in use:
    1. Remove the Printhead and wipe the contacts on the printer and Printhead, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Removing and Reinserting (Reseat) the Printhead and Resolving Printhead Errors by Cleaning the Printhead.
    2. Reseat the Printhead.
    3. If the issue persist, Contact Technical Support.



  • Printhead Error 3 and 4:
  •  Note:
    The ink cartridges need to be installed to troubleshoot this error.
    If this message appears at the initial or Out Of the Box (OOB) install:
    1. Leaving the ink cartridges installed, remove and reseat the Printhead, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Removing and Reinserting (Reseat) the Printhead.
    2. If the issue persist, Contact Technical Support.

    When this message appears after you received a Printhead Kit or replacement printer:
    1. Remove the Printhead and wipe the contacts on the printer and Printhead, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Removing and Reinserting (Reseat) the Printhead and Resolving Printhead Errors by Cleaning the Printhead.
    2. Reseat the Printhead.
    3. If the issue persist, Contact Technical Support.


    When this message appears after the printer has been in use:
    1. Ensure printer is turned off.
    2. Remove the power adapter (brick) from the printer, for more information refer to the Online User's Guide, click the model of the printer and the preferred language, download the User's Guide.
    3. Reseat the printer power cord into the power adapter (brick).

    4. If the issue persist:
      1. Remove the Printhead and wipe the contacts on the printer and Printhead, for more information refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Removing and Reinserting (Reseat) the Printhead and Resolving Printhead Errors by Cleaning the Printhead.
      2. Reseat the Printhead.
      3. If the issue persist, Contact Technical Support.



  • Printhead Cannot Move: The printhead carrier is obstructed in some way.
    1. Open the printer and remove any obstructions to the printhead, then close the printer.
    2. Press OK to clear the message.



  • Printhead Error: The printhead contacts are not being read correctly by the printer.
    1. Open the printer and then lift the printhead latch (Figure 4).

    2. Remove the entire printhead from the carrier (Figure 5).

    3. Wipe the printhead contacts inside the printhead carrier using a clean, lint-free cloth (Figure 6).

    4. Reinsert the printhead, then close the latch until it clicks into place.
    5. Close the printer.



  • Printhead Missing: The printhead is not installed or is installed incorrectly.
    1. Open the printer and lift the carrier latch.
    2. Insert the printhead and then close the latch until it clicks into place.
    3. Close the printer and press the home button to clear the message.



  • Printhead Unsupported: The printhead is either an unsupported model or is not being correctly sensed by the printer.
    1. Turn the printer off and then back on.
    2. Open the printer.
    3. Press the release tab and remove the print cartridges.
    4. Lift the carrier latch.
    5. Remove the unsupported printhead.
    6. Insert the supported printhead and then close the latch until it clicks into place.
    7. Reinstall the ink cartridges.
    8. Close the printer.



  • Printhead Warning: One or more cartridges have been missing for more than two hours since the printer was turned on. Clean or Deep Clean the printhead to restore print quality.

  Installing the Ink Cartridges Video  


  • For Windows® 7 and Vista®:
    1. Click the following link Installing the Ink Cartridges Video (English Only).
    2. Click Open.
    3. The User Account Control window may appear, if so click Allow.
    4. Watch the video as many times as needed.


  • For Windows XP:
    1. Click the following link Installing the Ink Cartridges Video (English Only).
    2. Click Save.
    3. In the Save As window click My Documents.
    4. Click Save.
     Note:
    To watch the video in Windows XP you will need a MP4 viewer such as QuickTime, which is available from Apple.
