How to resolve the PCI Simple Communications Controller error in Device Manager

Use these instructions to determine if the PCI Simple Communications Controller error is a result of missing or outdated chipset driver software and resolve the error.

Find the Device ID

  1. To open Device Manager, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Device Manager.
  2. In Device Manager, right-click the PCI Simple Communications Controller device.
  3. Click Properties.
  4. Click the Details tab.
  5. If not already selected, select Device Instance Id from the property list to display the device ID.
  6. If one of the following IDs is shown, install updated chipset driver software.
    • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C3A&SUBSYS_04A31028&REV_04
    • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C3A&SUBSYS_04A31028
    • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C3A&CC_078000
    • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C3A&CC_0780

Install updated chipset driver software

  1. On the Drivers & Downloads page, locate your computer model.
  2. Expand the Chipset category.
  3. To download the Dell-Driver software, click the Download button.
  4. Save the driver software to your Desktop.
  5. Close all open applications.
  6. Double-click the chipset installer and follow the onscreen instructions.

If installation fails, clear existing settings and try again

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open field, type regedit and press Enter.
  3. Click File > Export and save a copy of the file to your Desktop.
    • This saved file can be used to restore your settings if a problem occurs.
  4. Click the Plus Sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  5. Click the Plus Sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
  6. Click the Plus Sign (+) next to ControlSet001.
  7. Click the Plus Sign (+) next to Services.
  8. Click the HECIx64 folder, and press the Delete key.
  9. Click the Plus Sign (+) next to ControlSet002, and then click Services.
  10. Click the HECIx64 folder, and press the Delete key.
  11. Restart your computer.
  12. Reinstall the chipset driver you previously downloaded.
