» AC Power Adapter Requirements

Use an AC adapter, a plug adapter, and a power cable that are compatible with the local AC power source.

For Notebook Systems

  • The AC adapter sold with both Inspiron and Latitude systems will work with AC power sources worldwide. The AC adapter can handle 90-276 VAC 50-60 Hz, which means that the AC adapter will auto switch to adapt to a voltage current between 90 and 276 volts. The AC adapter will function properly without risk of damage as long as the current does not surpass this range.

  • You must obtain the appropriate plug adapter that will accommodate the type of power outlet particular to your travel destination(s).

  • Before using AC power in a foreign country, you may need to obtain a new power cable that is rated for use with the level of electrical voltage in that country. The power cable supplied with Dell™ notebook systems sold in the United States is rated to handle 115 volts.

For Desktop Systems

Locate the fan at the rear of the system. Below it you should find a red switch that will allow you to toggle between 110 volts and 220 volts; many foreign countries require that you change this to 220V.

Notice:
Be sure that you change the voltage setting before you plug in your system. Failure to do so can damage it.

For Dell Monitors

The internal power supply is auto-switching between 110V and 220V.

Note:
Plug your computer and monitor into a surge protector if possible.

» Internet Access Availability Outside the United States

Internet access is determined by the access available from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and the compatibility of your modem with the phone architecture in use in a particular country. Check with your ISP for more information.

Note:
In many countries outside the U.S. and Canada, local phone service is billed according to connect time, rather than by a flat monthly rate (similar to long distance calls in the U.S.). All local phone charges incurred are billed locally, either directly to you by the hotel or by the telephone service provider in the country of access and are not included in the account charges.

» International Modem Compatibility

Check to make sure that your modem can be used in other countries. International hardware modems will not require any software or hardware updates.

If you are unsure whether your system is equipped with an international modem, refer to the modem specifications in your printed User's Guide for the list of compatible countries. You may also find the information at support.dell.com.

  1. Browse to the Dell User Guides.

  2. Click Communication, and then select your modem model from the list.

If your modem does not indicate compatibility with your travel destination, you may wish to visit our website or call your sales representative to purchase an international modem.

If you have an international modem and it is compatible with your travel destination, you must reconfigure the modem properties to work in the country or region to which you are traveling.

Note:
Your modem must be set to Tone dial and not Pulse dial.

Some non-international modems are designed to function in designated countries outside the US and Canada. If your modem is designated to work in the country to which you are traveling, you should be able to use your modem after additional updates and configuration are performed.

A special telephone plug adapter may also be required to connect to the phone jack at your destination.

Notice:
It is important that you do not use your modem with an incompatible telephone system. If you do so, you may damage your modem and your computer.

» General Portable Travel Tips

Notice:
Do not move the computer around while the CD or DVD drive is reading or writing data from a CD or DVD. Doing so could interrupt the flow of data and cause incomplete data transfer to your hard drive or to a floppy disk.

    • Consider changing your power management options to maximize battery life.
    • If you are traveling internationally and to speed your passage through customs, carry proof of ownership or proof of your right to use the computer if it is company-owned. Investigate the customs regulations of the countries you plan to visit and consider acquiring an international carnet (an international customs document that facilitates temporary imports into foreign countries) from your government if you will be traveling through many different countries.
    • Check with your credit card company for information about the kinds of emergency travel assistance they may offer. Many companies provide services to help you solve problems, such as quickly locating floppy disks or providing a direct-dial telephone line for your modem connection.
