Dell™ Laser Printer 1720 FAQ
Administrative access is required to install printer drivers.
Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD.
When the Drivers and Utilities CD screen appears, click Personal Installation - Install the printer for use on individual computer only, and then click Next.
Select your printer from the drop-down menu.
Select Typical Installation (recommended), and then click Install.
Click Finish, connect the printer to the computer using a USB or parallel cable, and then turn on the printer.
Microsoft's Plug and Play finishes installing the printer and prompts when setup is completed.
Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD. When the Drivers and Utilities CD launches, click Cancel.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Start the Add Printer wizard:
For Windows XP:
For Windows Vista:
Click to select a local printer attached to a computer, and then click Next.
A prompt to attach the printer to the computer appears. Select the port for the printer to use, and then click Next.
Click Have Disk.
Browse to the CD drive and select the directory for your operating system:
For Windows NT 4.0: x:\Drivers\Print\Win_NT.40\, where x is the drive letter of your optical disc drive.
For Windows 2000, XP, Windows Vista® and Windows Server 2003: x:\Drivers\Print\Win_2kXP\, where x is the drive letter of your optical disc drive.
Click Open, and then click OK.
Select the type of driver to install in the Manufacturer list, select the printer model in the Printers list, and then click Next.
Proceed through the rest of the Add Printer Wizard, and then click Finish to install the printer driver.
When the Drivers and Utilities CD launches, click Additional Software Installation - Install the printer support software, and then click Next.
Click the check boxes next to the printer software to be installed, and then click Install.
When the Drivers and Utilities CD screen appears, click Network Installation - Install the printer for use on a network, and then click Next.
Select I am setting up a print server to share printers with others on the network, and then click Next .
Select the network printer(s) that you want to install. If no printer is listed, click Refresh List to refresh the list, or click Manual Add to add a printer to the network.
Click Next.
The printer installation offers two drivers, Host Based Printing (HBP) and PostScript (PS3). Click the driver to select it, and then configure its available options:
When you are finished configuring the printer drivers, click Next.
Click to select the check boxes next to the software and documentation that you want to install, and then click Install .
When the installation completed screen appears, click Finish.
Select I want to use a network printer on this computer, and then click Next.
Select the network printer(s) you want to install. If the printer is not listed, click Refresh List to refresh the list, or click Manual Add to add a printer to the network.
Connect the network cable and power on the printer.
Press and hold the Continue button for 2-3 seconds to print a network settings report.
Obtain the MAC address of the printer from the network settings report. The MAC address is the value listed under the Standard Network Card section as UAA.
When the Drivers and Utilities CD screen appears, click the Set IP Address link.
When the Set IP Address Utility window appears, enter the MAC address in the box under Discover Print Servers, and then click Discover.
Click to select your printer in the box under Configure Print Servers, and then click TCP/IP Settings.
When the TCP/IP Settings appears, enter the TCP/IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway Address.
Click Apply to save the settings, and then click Close to exit the utility.
Open a Web browser and enter the printer's IP address in the address bar.
Click Configuration on the left side of the Web page.
Click TCP/IP under Printer Server Settings.
Click Set static IP address.
Enter the IP Address, Netmask and Gateway settings.
If these settings are not known, contact the network administrator.
Click Submit.
Enter the new IP address in the Web browser to continue using the EWS.

Unpack the drawer, and remove any packing material.
Place the drawer in the location that is chosen for the printer.
Align the holes in the printer with the positioning posts on the drawer, and lower the printer into place (Figure 1).

Install the software for the printer before configuring the paper trays.
Open the printer configuration window:
For Windows XP: Click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
For Windows Vista: Click Printer under Hardware and Sound.
Right-click the printer icon, and then click Properties.
Click the Install Options tab.
Click to select 550-sheet drawer in the Available Options box, and then click Add.
Click Apply and then OK.

To reset the photoconductor drum counter, press and hold the Cancel button on the printer until all lights flash in sequence. You can clear the Replace photoconductor message only when the imaging drum has been replaced. For more information on how to replace the drum, see the User's Guide.
Return the printer settings to the factory default values by pressing and holding the Continue button.
An alternate method of resetting the factory defaults is to use the Settings button on the printer. For more information, refer to the User's Guide.
Resetting the printer to the original settings may solve formatting problems. All menu items are reset to the factory default values except Display Language.
Check the USB cable connections between the computer and the printer.
Try a different USB cable, if available.
Uninstall and reinstall the Dell Laser Printer 1720/1720dn driver.
