While technology is making it easier to get past problems with scratches on discs, it is good to keep your discs in sleeves or cases.

» DVD Applications

The most common DVD content is video. Many DVD manufacturers include some type of application on the disc that can play movies on your computer if your computer does not have DVD player software installed. If your computer has a DVD player already installed, it may conflict with the player that comes with the DVD disc.

Note:

  • All Dell™ computers that ship with a DVD drive have a DVD movie application. Dimension™ systems are currently using Cyberlink PowerDVD, and Inspiron™ systems are currently using InterVideo WinDVD or Dell CinePlayer as their DVD applications.

Many of the DVD players bundled with discs prompt you to install the player when you first insert the disc into the computer. It is best if you cancel out of this option to install the player and use the DVD player provided by Dell.

» Quality of the DVD Disc and DVD Player

Just like regular CDs, the actual manufacturer of the disc can affect the quality of the media that is on it. It is possible to have a poor quality disc that will only play in a few DVD drives. The reverse may also be true. Taking a high quality disc and trying to make a DVD with a low quality drive can cause the same problems. This situation typically applies to discs created in DVD+RW drives.
