After removing a CD or DVD recording program such as Adaptec DirectCD or Roxio Easy CD Creator, the following symptoms may occur:

  • The CD or DVD drive no longer appears in Microsoft® Windows®.
  • When accessing the CD or DVD drive, a Code 31 error message appears.

This problem occurs if incorrect values remain in the UpperFilters registry entry and in the LowerFilters registry entry after the CD recording program is removed.

Note:
This problem may also occur on computers that are running Microsoft® Windows® Media Player 7.

To resolve this problem, manually remove the UpperFilters registry entry and the LowerFilters registry entry. Additionally, if Windows Media Player 7 is installed, remove it.

This article contains step-by-step instructions to perform these actions. Additionally, this article contains a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that describes this problem.
