This article describes an interoperability problem that exists between a certain model of the Westell VersaLink Gateway device and Dell wireless network adapters.

This problem affects Westell VersaLink Gateway devices that have the following characteristics:

  • Model number: A90-327W15-06
  • Firmware revision: 03.00.63A

If you have this device, you cannot establish a wireless network connection from your Dell computer. In this scenario, you cannot use a wireless connection to connect to the Internet. However, if you use an Ethernet cable to connect to the Westell VersaLink Gateway device, you can connect to the Internet successfully.

A firmware update from Verizon is available to resolve this problem.

This article describes how to verify the model number of the Westell VersaLink Gateway device. Additionally, this article describes how to obtain and install a firmware update to resolve this problem.

» Description

When you try to use a wireless network connection to connect to the Internet from your Dell computer, you are unsuccessful. If you plug the computer into the network, you can connect to the Internet successfully.

In this scenario, you experience the following symptoms:

  • Microsoft® Windows® detects the service set identifier (SSID) of the wireless access point (AP) as expected. However, you cannot connect to the wireless access point.
  • When you try to establish a wireless connection to the wireless access point, the SSID is no longer displayed.

You experience this problem if the following conditions are true:

  • You try to connect to a Westell VersaLink Gateway device.
  • The device has the model number A90-327W15-06.
  • The device is running firmware version 03.00.63A.

This problem occurs because of an interoperability problem between Westell VersaLink Gateway device model number A90-327W15-06 and Dell wireless network adapters.

To resolve this problem, perform the steps below.

  1. Verify the model number of the Westell VersaLink Gateway device.

  2. Update the firmware on the Westell VersaLink Gateway device.

» Verify the Model Number of the Westell VersaLink Gateway Device

To verify the model number and the firmware version of the Westell VersaLink Gateway device, follow these steps:

Notice:  
  We recommend that you verify the model number of the Westell VersaLink Gateway device before you install a firmware update. If you do not have a device that has model number A90-327W15-06, the device may no longer function after you apply the firmware update.  

  1. Turn over the Westell VersaLink Gateway device to examine the label that appears on the underside of the device.

  2. On the label, look for the model number that appears next to Model: under WESTELL in the upper left hand corner.

  3. Plug in the Westell VersaLink Gateway device, if it is not already plugged in.

  4. Press the reset button that is located on the rear of the Westell VersaLink Gateway device. This action resets the device to the default values.

  5. Wait one minute for the reset process to finish.

  6. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the Westell VersaLink Gateway device, and then turn on the computer.

  7. Start a Web browser program such as Windows Internet Explorer®. A The Page Cannot Be Displayed error page may appear.

  8. In the address bar of the Web browser, type 192.168.1.1, and then click Go. The Enter Network Password screen appears.

  9. In the User Name box, type your Verizon Online user name.

  10. In the Password box, type your Verizon Online password, and then click OK. The Westell Advanced Home screen appears.

  11. Click the About tab. The About screen appears. 
     
  12. On the About screen, verify that A90-327W15-06 appears next to Model Number. Also, note the firmware version number that appears next to Software Version.

» Update the Firmware on the Westell VersaLink Gateway Model A90-327W15-06 Device

To update the firmware on a Westell VersaLink Gateway model A90-327W15-06 device, perform the following steps:

Note:  
  For a Dell wireless network adapter to connect successfully, the Westell VersaLink Gateway model A90-327W15-06 device must be updated to firmware version 03.02.01 or a later firmware version.  

  1. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the Westell VersaLink Gateway device.

  2. Turn on the Westell VersaLink Gateway device.

  3. Download a firmware update for the Westell VersaLink Gateway device, which displays the File Download - Security Warning window. (Figure 1)

  4. Click Save to display the Save As window.

  5. Click the Desktop icon that is located in the left column, and then click Save to save the A90-327W15_VER03_02_01.exe file to the Windows desktop.

  6. Right-click the file, and then click Run.

Note:  
  If you update the firmware from a computer that is running Windows Vista™, right-click the A90-327W15_VER03_02_01.exe file, and then click Run As Administrator.  

The program updates the firmware on the Westell VersaLink Gateway device. If you experience a problem with installing the firmware update or want more information, contact Verizon.
