Ink Jet Printer Driver Communication Errors in Windows® Vista® After Upgrading From Windows XP

The following error message may appear when printing to a Inkjet Dell printer after upgrading to Microsoft Windows Vista from Windows XP:

Communication not available
The issue is only seen if the Windows Vista version of the printer driver is installed without first installing the Windows XP driver.

The Windows Vista printer driver is experiencing a SUB communication conflict with the old Windows XP printer driver. The communication error message appears every time a print job is sent to the printer.

Note:  
 

This issue is not seen:

  • If the Windows XP printer driver is uninstalled prior to installing the Windows Vista printer driver after upgrading to Windows Vista.
  • If it is a clean installation of Windows Vista.
  • If the Windows XP printer driver is uninstalled before updating to Windows Vista.
 

A patch is available to resolve this issue for the following printers:
  • Printer 720 (Personal Inkjet)


  • Printer 725 (Personal Inkjet)


  • Printer J740 (Personal Inkjet)


  • Printer A920 (Personal All-in-One)


  • Printer 922 (Photo All-in-One)


  • Printer 924 (Photo All-in-One)


  • Printer 928 (Photo All-in-One)


  • Printer A940 (Personal All-in-One)


  • Printer 942 (Photo All-in-One)


  • Printer 946 (Personal All-in-One)


  • Printer 948 (Photo All-in-One)


  • Printer 964 (Photo All-in-One)


  • Printer 966 (Personal All-in-One)


  • Instructions to download and run the patch for your printer that will uninstall the Windows XP printer driver are shown below.

    After uninstalling the Windows XP printer driver using the patch, reinstall the Windows Vista printer driver. For additional information on downloading the latest driver, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article "How to Download and Install Printer Drivers" Article ID: 332365.

» Download and Install the Patch/Upgrade

  1. Browse to the Drivers and Downloads page.




  2. Click
     
    Enter a Tag
     to use the Service Tag of your Dell Printer to find the driver.

    Note:  
      If the Service Tag is not available, click
     
    Select Model
    and select the appropriate printer model.



  3. Click
     
    Go
    or
     
    Confirm
    .




  4. Select the desired Operating System and Driver Language from the drop-down boxes as pictured in Figure 1. The Category and Importance boxes should remain set to All.

    Operating System:    
      Windows Vista (32 or 64-bit)
    Driver Language:    
      English
    Category:    
      All
    Importance:    
      All

  5. Click  Download Now to the right of Dell - Patch/Upgrade.

    Note:  
      By downloading, you accept the terms of the Dell Software License Agreement.  



  6. Click the Run button.




  7. Make sure the box next to Close this dialog box when download completes is unchecked.



  8. When the download completes, click Allow or Run.



  9. In the Select the folder where you want to unzip the files to window, click OK.




  10. If a message appears asking to overwrite the folder, click Yes to All. If a message appears asking to create a folder, click Yes.




  11. In the All files were successfully unzipped window, click OK.




  12. Follow the prompts that appear to install the driver.




  13. If prompted to restart your system, click OK.
