» Use the Driver Roll Back Utility

  1. Click the Start button, right-click My Computer, and then left-click Properties.

  2. In the System Properties window, click the tab labeled Hardware, and then click the button labeled Device Manager.

  3. In Device Manager, click to navigate to the device for which you want to restore the previous drivers.

  4. Double-click the device name to highlight the device.

  5. When you click the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver in the Device Properties window, a window appears and asks if you are sure you want to roll back the driver.

    Note:
If there are no backed up drivers for this device (such as when the device is using drivers native to Microsoft® Windows® XP or when the drivers have never been updated), the system displays a dialogue box that informs you that no driver files have been backed up for this device.

  6. The system rolls back the driver when you click Yes to continue the driver roll back process. There is no visual indication as this process occurs. When the roll back is finished, the system returns to the properties window.

  7. When you click Close, the computer prompts you to restart the computer

  8. Click Yes to restart the computer. Windows should be using the older version of the driver.

The Microsoft Windows XP driver rollback feature allows for only one level of rollback; only one prior driver version can be saved at a time.

» Restore the Computer to a Previous State

Notice:
Using System Restore to revert the computer to an earlier state may delete data in folders other than the Documents and Settings folder. If you have data in other folders that have changed since the date and time of the point to which you are restoring, back up the data before using System Restore. For more information, see Dell Knowledge Base Article: "How to Back Up Vital Data in Microsoft® Windows® XP" Article ID: 291601.

To restore the computer to a previous state:

  1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.

  2. In the Help and Support Center window under Pick a task, click Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.

  3. In the Welcome to System Restore window, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

  4. In the System Restore window, click Select a Restore Point page.

    Note:
The calendar on the left displays dates in bold. These dates are the restore points. The list on the right displays the restore points available for the selected date.

  5. On the calendar, click a date to which you want to restore. Then, on the list, click the restore point that you want. Select a date and restore point on which you know the computer was working correctly.

  6. Click Next.

  7. In the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the restore point that is listed is the one you selected, and then click Next.

  8. After the computer restarts and the Restoration Complete page of the System Restore window appears, click OK.

» Use Dell DataSafe™ Backup

If you purchased the Dell DataSafe option when you ordered your computer, you can use it to roll back the system to a healthy state. If you need to recover from a complete hard drive failure and have DataSafe, then you only have to replace the failing drive. The RAID BIOS detects the new drive, and then automatically rebuilds the new drive.

Use the Norton Ghost 10 user interface to restore data that has been backed up to the DataSafe partition. To open Norton Ghost, click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Norton Ghost, and then click Norton Ghost to display the Norton Ghost window.

For information on how to use Ghost 10 for your backup and restore needs, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article "How Do I Use Symantec Ghost 10 to Back Up My Dell™ System" Article ID: 297137.
