Clearing Passwords

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions located in the Product Information Guide.
  1. Follow the procedures in "Before You Begin" in the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com.

  2. Remove the computer cover (see "Removing the Computer Cover" in the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com).

  3. Locate the 2-pin password connector on the system board.

  1. Remove the 2-pin jumper plug from the pins and set the jumper plug aside.

  2. Replace the computer cover (see "Replacing the Computer Cover" in the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com).

  3. Connect your keyboard and mouse, then connect your computer and monitor to electrical outlets and turn them on.

  4. After the Microsoft® Windows® desktop appears on your computer, turn off the computer.

NOTE: Ensure that the computer is off and not in a power management mode. If you cannot shut down the computer using the operating system, press and hold the power button for 4 seconds.
  1. Disconnect the keyboard and mouse, then disconnect the computer and monitor from their electrical outlets.

  2. Press the power button on the computer to ground the system board.

  3. Remove the computer cover.

  4. Replace the 2-pin jumper plug onto the pins of the password connector on the system board.

NOTE: The password jumper plug must be reinstalled on the password jumper pins in order to enable the password feature.
  1. Replace the computer cover.

NOTICE: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network wall jack and then plug it into the computer.
  1. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and then turn them on.

NOTE: In System Setup (see System Setup), both system and administrator password options appear as Not Set. The password feature is enabled, but a password is not assigned.

Clearing CMOS Settings

CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions located in the Product Information Guide.
  1. Follow the procedures in "Before You Begin" in the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com.

NOTE: The computer must be disconnected from the electrical outlet to clear the CMOS setting.
  1. Remove the computer cover (see "Removing the Computer Cover" in the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com).

  2. Locate the 3-pin CMOS jumper on the system board (see "System Board Components" in the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com).

  3. Move the 3-pin jumper plug from pins 3 and 2 to pins 1 and 2.

  4. Wait five seconds for the CMOS to clear.

  5. Move the 2-pin jumper plug back to pins 3 and 2.

  6. Replace the computer cover (see "Replacing the Computer Cover" in the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com).

NOTICE: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network port or device and then plug it into the computer.
  1. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and turn them on.


Flashing the BIOS

The BIOS may require flashing when an update is available or when replacing the system board.

  1. Turn on the computer.

  2. Locate the BIOS update file for your computer at the Dell Support website at support.dell.com.

  3. Click Download Now to download the file.

  4. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement.

The File Download window appears.

  1. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.

The Save In window appears.

  1. Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop, and then click Save.

The file downloads to your desktop.

  1. Click Close when the Download Complete window appears.

The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file.

  1. Double-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the on-screen instructions.
