Installing the NVIDIA Windows XP Display Driver    

 Note:

If you ordered this graphics card with a system, Dell installed and configured it for use. Refer to the following instructions only if you purchased a customer kit or need to install a new device driver.


Installing the NVIDIA Windows XP Display Driver 

 Note:

The NVIDIA driver software must be installed on your Windows system by a user with Administrator privileges. Please consult your System Administrator or Microsoft Windows User's Manual for more information on Administrator privileges.

Extract NVIDIA Driver from the Dell Resource CD

  1. Insert the Dell Resource CD into the CD/DVD-ROM drive.
  2. If the Dell Resource CD window does not open automatically, double-click My Computer on your desktop and then double-click the CD/DVD-ROM drive containing the Dell Resource CD.
  3. Follow the instructions provided by the Dell Resource CD to locate the NVIDIA driver package for your graphics card.
  4. Once you have located the package, select it to unzip the driver on to the hard drive. The files are extracted by default directory to the C:\Dell\Drivers\xxxxx (where xxxxx is the name of the driver being unzipped).
  5. At the WinZip Self-Extractor screen, click OK.
  6. At the Dell Computer Self-Extracting Driver Installation screen, click Unzip. Once the files have been unzipped, click OK.
  7. In a moment, your browser opens with further instructions for installing the driver.

Install Updated NVIDIA Driver under Windows XP

 Note:  

The following instructions refer to installation of the NVIDIA driver from your Dell Resource CD. If you downloaded the driver from the Dell Support web site, then in instruction 3 below type the correct path on your hard drive where the new driver has been downloaded.

  1. The NVIDIA driver software must be installed by a user with Windows Administrator privileges. Please consult your System Administrator or Microsoft Windows XP User's Manual for more information on Administrator privileges.
  2. Start Microsoft Windows XP.
  3. Double click on the Setup.exe file located with the NVIDIA driver package. If you extracted the driver files from the Dell Resource CD using the default directory they will be located in C:\Dell\Drivers\xxxxx (where xxxxx is the name of the driver being unzipped).
  4. At the InstallShield screen, click Next to begin the NVIDIA driver install procedure. Follow the InstallShield instructions to install your driver.
  5. Click Finish to complete the NVIDIA driver installation.
  6. When prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
What to do if your NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200-based card is not recognized by Windows:
  1. The NVIDIA driver software must be installed by a user with Windows Administrator privileges. Please consult your System Administrator or the Microsoft Windows XP User's Guide for more information on Administrator privileges.
  2. Start Microsoft Windows XP.
  3. From the Windows taskbar, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Add/Remove Hardware icon.
  5. Click Next.
  6. If the Add/Troubleshoot a device option is not selected, select it and click Next.
  7. Click and highlight the Video Controller (VGA Compatible) option and  click Next. The message "The driver for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" is displayed.
  8. Click Finish. The Upgrade Device Driver Wizard windows appear.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended) and click Next.
  11. Under Optional Search Locations, select Specify a location only and click Next.
  12. Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\xxxxx in the space provided and click OK.
  13. After Windows finds the drivers, click Next. Files will be copied.
  14. Click Finish
  15. Restart your computer.

Changing NVIDIA Display Driver Settings

  1. From the Windows taskbar, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon to open the Display Properties panel.
  3. Click the Settings tab to open the Settings panel.
  4. Set the desired color depth and screen resolution in the Color and Screen resolution (area) list boxes. (Refer to Modifying Display Modes for supported resolutions.) 
  5. Click Apply and then click OK to exit the Display Properties panel.
  6. Click Apply to apply your settings. 

    The reinstallation of the NVIDIA Windows XP Display Driver for your NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200-based graphics card is now complete.
