Asset Tag Utility

The Asset Tag utility allows you to enter an asset tag code for your computer. Thereafter, you can display this code using the Asset Tag utility, the Dell Control Center, or the System Setup program.

NOTE: Before using the Asset Tag utility, restart the computer with an MS-DOS system diskette in drive A.

Assigning and Deleting an Asset Tag Code in the Microsoft Windows 95 Operating System

To assign an asset tag code, click the Security window in the Dell Control Center. Then click the Admin Options button and follow the directions.

Assigning and Deleting an Asset Tag Code in the Microsoft Windows NT Operating System

To assign an asset tag code, use the Asset Tag utility.

Assigning and Changing an Asset Tag Code

  1. At the system prompt, type asset and a space followed by the code; then press <Enter>.
An asset tag code can have up to ten characters; any combination of characters excluding spaces is valid. For example, type the following command line and press <Enter>:

    asset 1234A6789&
  2. When prompted to verify the asset tag code, type y.
The system then displays the new asset tag code.

Viewing an Asset Tag Code

To view the existing asset tag code and service tag number, type asset and press <Enter>.

Deleting an Asset Tag Code

To delete the asset tag code without assigning a new one, type asset /d and press <Enter>. When prompted to confirm the deletion, type y.

Reinstalling the Asset Tag Utility

Dell installed the Asset Tag utility on the hard-disk drive both as a working utility and in a diskette image. If you need to reinstall the Asset Tag utility, do so as follows:

  1. If you have not done so already, make a diskette copy of the system utilities diskette image on your hard-disk drive.
  2. With the backup diskette in drive A, copy the asset.com file from the diskette to the directory of your choice on the hard-disk drive.
  3. If the path statement in your autoexec.bat file does not already contain the directory in which you installed the Asset Tag utility, modify the path statement to include that directory.
See your operating system documentation for information on modifying the autoexec.bat file.

Battery Status Utility

Start the Battery Status utility by double-clicking the Battery Status icon in the Dell Accessories folder. The icon appears minimized at the bottom of your screen and is always displayed unless you double-click the icon and turn it off.

The Battery Status icons change to reflect the following power conditions of your computer:

The primary battery and optional secondary battery are installed. Both battery icons are shaded to show the amount of charge remaining. The computer is not connected to AC power.
The primary battery is installed. The left battery icon is shaded to show the amount of charge remaining. No secondary battery is installed, and the computer is not connected to AC power.
The secondary battery is installed. The right battery icon is shaded to show the amount of charge remaining. No primary battery is installed, and the computer is not connected to AC power.
The flashing down arrow indicates a low-battery condition for either the primary or secondary battery. The flashing down arrow remains superimposed over the battery icon until it is charged. When a low-battery condition exists for both the primary and secondary batteries, a flashing down arrow is superimposed over both battery icons.
NOTE: When both the primary and secondary batteries are installed, the computer draws power first from the secondary battery. Therefore, when a low-battery condition exists for the primary battery, save your work and connect the computer to AC power.
The computer is connected to AC power, and the secondary battery is installed. The right battery icon is shaded to show the amount of charge remaining. No primary battery is installed.
The computer is connected to AC power only. Neither battery icon is shaded, indicating that neither the primary nor the secondary battery is installed.

Suspend-to-Disk Utility

The Suspend-to-Disk utility allows you to manage the S2D partition in your files system, where all system data is copied and saved when the computer is put in suspend-to-disk mode.

Removing the S2D Partition

  1. At an MS-DOS prompt, type cd c:\dell\util and press <Enter> to change to the directory on your hard-disk drive that contains the Suspend-to-Disk utility files.
If you are using an operating system that is not compatible with MS-DOS, see the readme.s2d file for directions.
  2. Type rms2d and press <Enter>.

Status messages appear on the display during the removal process. When the S2D partition has been removed, the following message appears:

The S2D partition was successfully removed.

NOTE: After you remove the S2D partition, the computer cannot activate Suspend-to-Disk mode until you recreate the partition.

Creating the S2D Partition

Use the mks2d.exe file to create a new S2D partition in the following cases:

  • If Dell did not install MS-DOS on the hard-disk drive

  • If you increased the amount of system memory by adding a memory module

  • If you used rms2d.exe to remove the original S2D partition and need to recreate it

  • If the hard-disk drive becomes corrupted

  • If you install a new hard-disk drive

  • If you received the system utilities separately on diskette or if you deleted the suspend-to-disk utility from your hard-disk drive

Use the following procedure to create the S2D partition:

NOTE: If you are creating the partition on a new hard-disk drive or if Dell did not install MS-DOS on the hard-disk drive, read the readme.s2d file for instructions.
  1. At an MS-DOS prompt, type cd c:\dell\util and press <Enter> to change to the directory on your hard-disk drive that contains the Suspend-to-Disk utility files.

  2. Type mks2d and press <Enter>.

As the utility builds the partition, status messages appear on the display. If an error message appears, it provides information about steps to take to continue building the partition. When the S2D partition has been built and verified, the following message appears:

The S2D partition was successfully created.
