Diskette Drive or CD-ROM Drive

Removing the Diskette Drive or CD-ROM Drive

The diskette drive bay (options drive bay) is designed to hold either a diskette drive, CD-ROM, or a secondary battery.

  1. See the table following these instructions first for specific information about your configuration. To remove the device, turn the computer over and unlock the options bay lock. Push the latch forward to unlock the device in the options bay. Hold the latch open while removing the device.
  2. With the right side of the computer facing you, pull the diskette drive or CD-ROM straight out.
  3. To reinstall the diskette drive or CD-ROM in the options bay, insert the device in the bay and push it into the computer until you hear the connector click into place.
  4. On the bottom of the computer, pull the lock into place preventing the latch from moving forward.

NOTE: If you boot the computer with a diskette drive or battery in the options bay, you must reboot after installing the CD-ROM drive in the options bay. If you boot the computer with a CD-ROM drive in the options bay, press <Fn><Esc> to place the computer into suspend mode before removing the CD-ROM drive and installing a diskette drive or battery in the options bay.

Diskette drive CD-ROM drive
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Remove the diskette drive.
  3. Install the CD-ROM drive.
  4. Reboot the computer.
Diskette drive Secondary battery
  1. Remove the diskette drive.
  2. Install the battery.
CD-ROM drive Secondary battery
  1. Press <Fn><Esc> to enter suspend mode.
  2. Remove the CD-ROM drive.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press any key on the built-in keyboard to resume normal activity.
CD-ROM drive Diskette drive
  1. Press <Fn><Esc> to enter suspend mode.
  2. Remove the CD-ROM drive.
  3. Install the diskette drive.
  4. Press any key on the built-in keyboard to resume normal activity.
Secondary battery CD-ROM drive
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Install the CD-ROM drive.
  4. Reboot the computer.
Secondary battery Diskette drive
  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Install the diskette drive.

Hard-Disk Drive

Removing the Hard-Disk Drive

The hard-disk drive can be removed to upgrade to a larger-capacity drive. The computer automatically senses the hard-disk drive type.

NOTE: The computer's BIOS does not support hard-disk drives received from vendors other than Dell.
  1. To remove the hard-disk drive turn the computer over and remove the 2 screws securing it in the bay.
  2. Turn the computer right side up. With the computer facing you, slide the hard-disk drive cover to the left and away from the computer.
  3. Use the handle on the front of the hard-disk drive and pull the drive straight out of the computer.
  4. To reinstall the hard-disk drive, insert the hard-disk drive in the bay and push it until you hear the connector click into place.
