Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
CAUTION: The processor heat sinks can get hot during operation. To avoid burns, ensure that the system has sufficient time to cool before removing the system board.

Removing the System Board

  1. Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet.

  2. Open the system. See "Opening the System" in "Troubleshooting Your System."

  3. Remove the cooling shroud. See "Removing the Cooling Shroud" in "Installing System Components."

  4. Remove all expansion cards installed in the system. See "Removing an Expansion Card" in "Installing System Components."

  5. Remove all memory riser cards or memory-riser-card filler blanks installed in the system. See "Removing a Memory Riser Card" or "Removing a Memory-Riser-Card Filler Blank" in "Installing System Components."

  6. Remove the PCI-card support bracket from the system. See Figure C-3.

    1. Slide the latch at each end of the support bracket towards the back of the system.

    1. Lift the support bracket out of the system.

Figure C-3. Removing the PCI-Card Support Bracket

  1. Remove the processor heat sink(s) and processor filler blanks. See "Removing a Processor" and Figure 6-13 in "Installing System Options."

  2. Disconnect the following cables from the system board. See Figure A-3 in "Jumpers and Connectors" for the location of the cable connectors on the system board.

    • Disconnect the SCSI backplane interface cable from connector BKPLN SIG.

    • Disconnect the SCSI controller interface cable(s) from connectors SCSI_A and SCSI_B.

    • Disconnect the power distribution harness from the power cable connectors on the system board.

    • Disconnect the chassis-intrusion switch from the system board.

    • If applicable, disconnect the optional RAID battery from the RAID_BAT connector.

See step 10 in "Activating the Optional Integrated RAID Controller" in "Installing Drives" for suggestions on improving access to this connector.

  1. Remove the RAID battery holder from the side of the system by sliding the holder upwards until the tabs at each end of the holder disengage from the slots in the system chassis. See Figure C-4.

Figure C-4. Removing the RAID Battery Holder

  1. Lift the blue retention pin and slide the system board toward the front of the chassis about 1.2 cm (0.5 inch).

  2. Holding the system board by the black plastic processor retainer bracket and the back edge of the board, carefully lift the system board out of the chassis. See Figure C-4.

You may need to tilt the board to avoid interference from the power distribution harness.
