CAUTION: Many repairs may be done only by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical
outlet.
Open the system. See "Opening the System" in "Troubleshooting Your System."
Disconnect the control-panel interface cable from the CTRL_PNL connector on the back of
the SCSI backplane. See Figure A-5 in "Jumpers and Connectors".
Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the three mounting screws that secure the control
panel assembly to the chassis. See Figure C-1.
Lift the control panel assembly and its cable away from the system. See Figure C-1.
Figure C-1. Removing the Control Panel Assembly
Installing the Control Panel Assembly
Insert the control-panel interface cable through the opening in the front of the system and
connect the cable to the CTRL_PNL connector on the back of the SCSI backplane. See
Figure A-5.
Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, install the three mounting screws that secure the control
panel assembly to the chassis. See Figure C-1.
Close the system. See "Closing the System" in "Troubleshooting Your System."
Reconnect the system to its electrical outlet and turn the system on, including any attached
peripherals.
Chassis-Intrusion Switch

System Board
The system board and system board tray are removed and replaced as a single assembly.
CAUTION: The processor heat sinks can get hot during operation. To avoid burns, ensure that the system has sufficient time to cool before removing the system board.
Removing the System Board
Turn off the system and attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical
outlet.
Open the system. See "Opening the System" in "Troubleshooting Your System."
Remove the PCI-card support bracket from the system. See Figure C-3.
Slide the latch at each end of the support bracket towards the back of the system.
Lift the support bracket out of the system.
Figure C-3. Removing the PCI-Card Support Bracket
Remove the processor heat sink(s) and processor filler blanks. See "Removing a Processor" and
Figure 6-13 in "Installing System Options."
Disconnect the following cables from the system board. See Figure A-3 in "Jumpers and
Connectors" for the location of the cable connectors on the system board.
Disconnect the SCSI backplane interface cable from connector BKPLN SIG.
Disconnect the SCSI controller interface cable(s) from connectors SCSI_A and SCSI_B.
Disconnect the power distribution harness from the power cable connectors on the system board.
Disconnect the chassis-intrusion switch from the system board.
If applicable, disconnect the optional RAID battery from the RAID_BAT connector.
Remove the RAID battery holder from the side of the system by sliding the holder upwards
until the tabs at each end of the holder disengage from the slots in the system chassis.
See Figure C-4.
Figure C-4. Removing the RAID Battery Holder
Lift the blue retention pin and slide the system board toward the front of the chassis about
1.2 cm (0.5 inch).
Holding the system board by the black plastic processor retainer bracket and the back edge of
the board, carefully lift the system board out of the chassis. See Figure C-4.
You may need to tilt the board to avoid interference from the power distribution harness.
Figure C-5. Removing and Installing the System Board
Installing the System Board
Unpack the new system board.
Ensure that the system board jumpers are set the same as on the board that you just removed,
and change the settings if necessary. See Figure A-2 in "Jumpers, Switches, and Connectors."
Reconnect the following cables to the system board. See Figure A-3 in "Jumpers and
Connectors" for the location of the connectors on the system board.
Connect the power distribution harness to the system board.
Connect the backplane interface cable to connector BKPLN SIG.
Connect the chassis-intrusion switch to the system board.
If applicable, reconnect the optional RAID battery to the RAID_BAT connector.
Connect the SCSI interface cable(s) to connectors SCSI_A and SCSI_B.
Reinstall the processor heat sink(s) and processor filler blanks. See "Installing a Processor" and
Figure 6-13 in "Installing System Options."
To replace the PCI-card support bracket, lower the bracket into the system until the latch at
each end of the bracket engages. See Figure C-3.
