Removing the System Board

CAUTION: Before performing the following procedures, read the safety instructions in your Product Information Guide.
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as the back panel) on the computer.

The system board's BIOS chip contains the Service Tag, which is also visible on a barcode label on the bottom of the computer. The replacement kit for the system board includes a CD that provides a utility for transferring the Service Tag to the replacement system board.

NOTICE: Disconnect the computer and any attached devices from electrical outlets, and remove any installed batteries.
  1. Follow the instructions in "Preparing to Work Inside the Computer."

  2. Remove the keyboard.

  3. Remove the display assembly.

  4. Remove the memory module.

  5. Remove the hard drive.

  6. Remove the thermal-cooling assembly.

  7. Remove the palm rest.

  8. Remove the Mini PCI card.

  9. Remove the modem.

  10. Disconnect the speaker from the system board.

  11. Disconnect the internal card with Bluetooth wireless technology from the system board.

  12. Disconnect the power button cable from the system board.

  1. Disconnect the hard drive cable from the ZIF connector on the system board.

  2. Loosen the captive screw securing the modem cable to the system board.

  3. Remove the six M2 x 3-mm screws that secure the system board to the computer base.

  4. Remove the system board from the computer base.

    1. Ensure that you have disconnected all cables from the system board.

    1. Gently lift the board starting from the left side, and then pull to the left to dislodge the audio connectors from the holes in the base.

NOTE: You may need to press outward on the base near the audio connectors to provide enough clearance for the audio connectors.
    1. After the connectors are dislodged, lift the board out of the base.

  1. Remove the secure digital card reader.

Installing the System Board

  1. Perform all the steps in "Removing the System Board" in reverse order.

NOTICE: Before turning on the computer, replace all screws and ensure that no stray screws remain inside the computer. Failure to do so may result in damage to the computer.
  1. Turn on the computer.

NOTE: After replacing the system board, enter the computer Service Tag into the BIOS of the replacement system board.
  1. Connect an external floppy or CD drive to the computer.

  2. Insert the floppy disk or CD that accompanied the replacement system board into the drive.

  3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
