CAUTION: To prevent static damage to components inside your computer, discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your computer's electronic components. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface.
NOTE: Memory modules purchased from Dell are covered under your computer warranty.
Ground yourself by touching one of the metal connectors on the back of the computer.
NOTE: If you leave the area, ground yourself again when you return to the computer.
Turn the computer upside-down, loosen the captive screws on the memory module/Mini PCI
cover, and then remove the cover.

NOTICE: To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the memory-module securing clips.
If you are replacing a memory module, remove the existing module:
Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module
connector until the module pops up.
Remove the module from the connector.

Replacing the Memory Module
Ground yourself and install the new memory module:
Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot.
Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and rotate the module down until it
clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it.

Replace the memory module/Mini PCI cover and tighten the screws.
NOTICE: If the cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer.
Insert the battery into the battery bay, or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical
outlet.
Turn on the computer.
As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information.
To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer, click Start®Help and Support® Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems®My Computer Information.
Optical Drive
Removing the Optical Drive
CAUTION: Before working inside your Dell™ computer, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide.
NOTICE: To prevent damage to devices, store them in a safe, dry place when they are not installed in the computer. Avoid pressing down on them or placing heavy objects on top of them.
NOTE: If your computer shipped with a device security screw and the screw is not installed, you can remove and install devices while the computer is running and connected to a docking device.
Close your display and turn the computer upside-down.
If a device security screw is present, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the M2.5 x 8-mm screw.
Using a screwdriver or a plastic scribe, push the notch by the device security screw hole toward the
outside of the computer.
Pull the optical drive straight out of the media bay.

Replacing the Optical Drive
Slide the new drive into the bay until it snaps securely into place.
If you removed the M2.5 x 8-mm device security screw, replace it.
Turn the computer top-side up and open the display.
The operating system automatically recognizes the device. If necessary, enter your password to unlock
your computer.
Mini PCI Card
Removing the Mini PCI Card
If you ordered a Mini PCI card with your computer, the card is already installed.
