Removing the System Board

CAUTION: Before performing the following procedures, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide.
CAUTION: To prevent static damage to components inside your computer, discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your computer's electronic components. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface.

The system board's BIOS chip contains the Service Tag, which is also visible on a barcode label on the bottom of the computer. The replacement kit for the system board includes a CD that provides a utility for transferring the Service Tag to the replacement system board.

  1. Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer.

  2. Remove the hard drive. See Removing the Hard Drive.

  3. Remove the optical drive. See Removing the Optical Drive.

  4. Remove the memory module. See Removing a Memory Module.

  5. Remove the Mini PCI card. See Removing the Mini PCI Card.

  6. Remove the processor thermal-cooling assembly. See Removing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly.

  7. Remove the processor. See Removing the Processor Module.

  8. Remove the hinge cover. See Removing the Hinge Cover.

  9. Remove the keyboard. See Removing the Keyboard.

  10. Remove the display assembly. See Removing the Display Assembly.

  11. Remove the palm rest. See Palm Rest.

  12. Remove the modem. See Removing the Modem.

  13. Remove the speakers connector. See Removing the Speakers.

  14. Remove the five M2.5 x 5-mm system board screws and lift the system board away from the base plastics.

Replacing the System Board

  1. Insert the video connector on the replacement system board through the side of the base plastics.

  2. Replace the five M2.5 x 5-mm screws that secure the system board to the base plastics.

  3. Reconnect the speakers. See Replacing the Speakers.

  4. Replace the modem that you removed from the system board. See Replacing the Modem.

  5. Replace the palm rest. See Palm Rest.

  6. Replace the display assembly. See Removing the Display Assembly and follow the procedure in reverse order.

  7. Replace the keyboard. See Replacing the Keyboard.

  8. Replace the processor. See Replacing the Processor Module.

NOTICE: Before you replace the processor thermal-cooling assembly, wipe the thermal grease off of the assembly with a clean paper towel. Squeeze the contents of the thermal grease packet (provided with the kit) onto the processor thermal-cooling assembly.
  1. Replace the processor thermal-cooling assembly. See Replacing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly.

  2. Replace the Mini PCI card that you removed from the old system board. See Replacing the Mini PCI Card.

  3. Replace the memory module that you removed from the old system board. See Replacing the Memory Module.

  4. Replace the optical drive. See Replacing the Optical Drive.

  5. Replace the hard drive. See Replacing the Hard Drive.

  6. Insert the battery into the battery bay. See Before Working Inside Your Computer.

  7. Connect the AC adapter to the computer and to an electrical outlet.

NOTICE: Before turning on the computer, replace all screws and ensure that no stray screws remain inside the computer. Failure to do so may result in damage to the computer.
NOTE: After replacing the system board, enter the computer Service Tag into the BIOS of the replacement system board.
  1. Turn on the computer.

  2. Insert the CD that accompanied the replacement system board into the appropriate drive. Follow the instructions on the screen.
