Loosen the captive screw (labeled "M") in the memory module cover, and lift the cover away
from the computer.

Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory
module connector until the module pops up.
Remove the module from the connector.

Installing the Memory Modules
NOTE: If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot properly. No error
message indicates this failure.
Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot.
Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and rotate the module down until it
clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it.
Replace the cover and tighten the captive screw.
NOTICE: If the memory module cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the
cover to close may damage your computer.
Insert the battery into the battery bay, or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an
electrical outlet.
Turn on the computer.
As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information.
To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer, click the Start button, click Help and Support, and then click Computer Information.
Optical Drive
Removing the Optical Drive

Remove the M2.5 x 8-mm screw from the indention labeled with a lock symbol (
).
Insert a screwdriver into the indention and push the notch on the metal tab to release the
drive from the bay.

Pull the drive out of the bay.
Installing the Optical Drive
Slide the new drive into the bay until it snaps securely into place.
Replace the M2.5 x 8-mm screw.
Modem
Removing the Modem

Turn the computer over and use a small plastic scribe to lift the two notched edges on the
back of the hinge cover.

Open the display all the way (180 degrees) so that it lies flat against your work surface.
Use a small plastic scribe to lift the right edge of the hinge cover.
Lift the hinge cover away from the hinges and computer base.

NOTICE: The keycaps on the keyboard are fragile, easily dislodged, and time-consuming to replace. Be
careful when removing and handling the keyboard.
NOTICE: When lifting the keyboard, be careful not to pull the keyboard connection out of the system
board.
Lift and turn the keyboard over and lay it across the palm rest over the touch pad.
Remove the M2 x 3-mm screw securing the modem to the system board, and set it aside.
Remove the captive screw from the modem.
Pull straight up on the attached pull-tab to lift the modem out of its connector on the system
board and disconnect the modem cable.

Installing the Modem
Connect the modem cable to the modem.
NOTICE: The cable connectors are keyed for correct insertion; do not force the connections.
Align the modem with the screw holes, and press the modem onto the connector on the
system board.
Install the M2 x 3-mm screw to secure the modem to the system board.
Replace and tighten the captive screw on the opposite corner of the modem.
Being careful not to pull the keyboard connection out of the system board, turn the keyboard
back over and insert the securing tabs on the front of the keyboard into their respective slots
in the palm rest and lower the keyboard into the computer base.
Ensure that all securing tabs are engaged before trying to completely seat the keyboard.
Insert the lower side of the hinge cover into the notches on the keyboard.
Snap down the hinge cover, and ensure that it is flush with the palm rest.

NOTE: Depending on the options ordered, the computer may be configured with a single antenna
located in the LCD to enhance wireless reception. When replacing the LCD, disconnect this antenna
before removing the LCD panel. In some cases, if an internal wireless card was not ordered with the
computer, it may not have an antenna in the LCD panel assembly and internal wireless functionality is not
enabled.
NOTE: The Inspiron 1200 offers an optional external wireless card to access wireless networks. It does
not have have an antenna in the LCD panel assembly.
