Jumpers: Dell™ Dimension™ XPS Rxxx Systems

NOTE: Red dot denotes pin 1.
Jumper Setting Jumper Description
Pins 1-2 jumpered
(Normal mode)
In Normal mode, system setup settings and installed passwords are retained when the system starts up. In this mode, an automatic recovery is attempted if the BIOS detects that any of its main blocks are corrupted.
Pins 2-3 jumpered
(Maintenance mode)
Starting the system with the jumper set in Maintenance mode automatically starts the system setup program, adds the Maintenance option to the menu bar, and displays the Maintenance screen. This screen provides 2 options: Processor Speed and Clear All Passwords.

CAUTION: Entering Maintenance mode returns all settings in the system setup program to their defaults. Dell strongly recommends that you record or print all current settings before entering this mode so you can correct them when the system is reset to Normal mode.

  • Processor speed — Options are 350 MHz, 400 MHz, and 450 MHz.

NOTE: Before leaving Maintenance Mode, reset Processor Speed to match the system's processor speed.

CAUTION: Setting a processor's speed to greater than its rated value can cause damage to the processor.

  • Clear All Passwords — Disables a forgotten password so that you can access the system and/or assign new passwords. For the complete password procedure, see "Disabling a Forgotten Password" in Appendix B of the Reference and Troubleshooting Guide.
