2.  CD-R/RW or DVD disc inserted in drive does not play.

  1. If the disc is dirty (fingerprints, etc.), clean it.

  2. If the disc is scratched, do not insert it into the drive.

  3. If the disc is inserted upside-down, reinsert it in the proper direction.

  4. If the drive is not recognized, refer to solutions 1-1 to 1-4.

3.  Disc tray does not open.

  1. If the power connector is not inserted, insert it properly.
  2. If the interface connector is not inserted, insert it properly.
  3. If the indicator does not light, refer to solutions 1-1 to 1-4.

4.  Certain types of discs do not play.

  1. This drive only supports discs with the formats indicated in the Introduction and Specifications sections. It cannot read the data on discs with other formats. Check the disc's format.

5.  Cannot play or read CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R or DVD-RW in the drive or write CD-R or CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW in the drive.

  1. Check to see if the disc is inserted upside-down.

  2. Try another disc. If this disc plays or writes, verify if the original disc is dirty or badly scratched. You may attempt to clean/restore the disc per the disc manufacturer’s recommendations.

  3. Did a screen saver or other application operate while writing to the disc? If so, try again with application turned off.

  4. Is there enough free space on the CD-R/RW disc or DVD+R/RW disc?

  5. Was the drive or disc recently moved from a low temperature environment to a high temperature environment? (There is a possibility of condensation on the lens in the drive or on the surface of the disc.) If so, try again after 15 min.

  6. Inspect the disc for dirtiness or scratches. Dirty media and media with many scratches or large scratches may not be readable/writeable by the drive.

  7. This drive cannot read DVD-RAM media.

6.  When playing an audio CD, the CD player shows that the disc is playing, but no sound is heard through the speakers.
  1. The drive's play mode may need to be set to "Digital." In Windows XP, for example, use the Control Panel and open "System" and then "Hardware." Start Device Manager and in "DVD/CD-ROM drives," double-click on the entry for the drive, then click on the "Properties" tab. Check the box marked "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device."
  2. The CD player application may need to be set to "Digital." In Windows Media Player, for example, from the menu bar click on "Tools," then "Options," and then click on the "Device" tab. Select the drive and click on the "Properties" button. Set the playback mode to "Digital."
7.  Drive will not write at maximum speed.
  1. Try different media.
  2. Make sure media is clean.

Note: Media from different manufactures and ages will record at different speeds.

NOTE: Consult the Dell documentation for your system for additional information on troubleshooting DVD+RW drive problems.
