The PERC 2/DC Windows NT software drivers are provided on the PERC 2/DC driver diskette. This is a miniport driver.
The Windows NT drivers support:
- 12 SCSI adapters per host system and
- eight logical drives per adapter.

There are two methods of installing the PERC 2/DC Windows NT 4.0 drivers:
- fresh installation and
- adding to an existing installation.
Fresh Installation
Use fresh installation if you are installing Windows
NT 4.0 for the first time and want to include the PERC 2/DC drivers and utilities.
Add to an Existing System Running Windows NT
4.0
If you are already running Windows NT 4.0 and want to add the PERC 2/DC Windows
NT Driver and Utilities, insert the PERC 2/DC Windows NT 4.0 driver diskette
in diskette drive A: (or B:).
Choose the Control Panel and double-click on the SCSI Adapters icon. Select
the Drivers tab. Click on the Add button and select Have Disk. Specify the location
of the PERC Windows NT 4.0 driver and click on OK. Follow the instructions on
the screen to add the PERC Windows NT 4.0 driver.
This procedure will install the PERC 2/DC drivers for Windows NT V4.0. You
must reboot the computer after PERC 2/DC Windows NT 4.0 driver installation
has completed successfully.
Configure Logical Drive
Logical drives can be configured on the PERC 2/DC SCSI adapter via the PERC
Console, a GUI RAID Management Utility. The logical drives can be configured
in Windows NT 4.0 using Disk Administrator. See Chapters 6, 7, or 8 for additional
information.
Perform the following procedure to install Windows NT 4.0 from a bootable CD.
The CD-ROM drive must be connected an IDE or SCSI port. This procedure will
make the PERC 2/DC controller the primary RAID controller.
1. Insert the Windows NT 4.0 installation CD in the CD-ROM drive before
Windows NT 4.0 is booted. A bootable CD is detected and the bootable BIOS
loads into memory.
2. When Windows NT 4.0 begins to boot from the CD
Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration
appears. Press <F6> immediately.
3. Within a few seconds a screen appears that asks for additional adapters in the system. Choose <S>, then press <Enter> on the OTHER option in the selection screen.
4. Insert the PERC 2/DC Windows NT 4.0 driver diskette in the floppy drive
and press <Enter>.
PERC NT SCSI DRIVER
appears in the middle of the screen. Press <Enter> to load the
driver. Press <Enter> again to continue operation as usual. By loading
Windows NT 4.0 in this manner, you have told Windows NT 4.0 that the PERC
2/DC controller is the primary controller. Windows NT 4.0 continues to be
installed as usual.
You may have to refer to additional information in the appropriate operating or user�s guide. The installation process includes:
- hardware installation,
- partition and format a SCSI hard disk drive,
- software installation, and
- configuration.
Hardware Installation
1. Install PERC 2/DC card in the server chassis. See Chapter 6
Hardware Installation for the installation procedure.
2. Attach all SCSI devices to the PERC 2/DC adapter.
3. Set the correct termination, and TIDs for each device on each channel.
See the appropriate technical documentation for the correct jumper settings
for each device.
4. Boot the server.
5. During boot, the PERC 2/DC BIOS banner should appear. If it does not,
power down and read Chapter 12 Troubleshooting.
6. After the PERC 2/DC BIOS banner appears, the PERC 2/DC software scans
the SCSI channels. After the channels are scanned, the adapter number, firmware
version, and cache DRAM size appear for only a few seconds.
Press <Ctrl><M> to run PERC2/DC BIOS Configuration Utility.
appears. Hold down <Ctrl>and press <M> to run this utility.
7. In the PERC 2/DC BIOS Configuration utility, highlight the Configure
option and press <Enter>.
8. From the Configure menu, highlight View/Add Configuration and press <Enter>. The SCSI channels will be scanned. After the SCSI channels are scanned, the Array Selection Menu appears.
9. The Array Selection menu should list all attached SCSI devices. If any devices are missing, power the system down and check all connections, termination, TIDs, and power connections. Rerun steps 8 � 10 until all devices are listed. If all devices are shown, press <Esc> until prompted to exit. Highlight Yes and press <Enter>.
Partition and Format SCSI Hard Disk Drive
1. Power down the system and reboot the server.
2. Run the PERC 2/DC BIOS Configuration utiliy when prompted. Choose the
format option. Select the drive to be formatted.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Software Installation
1. While the server is powered down, insert the first Windows NT 4.0 diskette
in drive A: and reboot.
2. From the Windows NT 4.0 Setup screen, insert Windows NT 4.0 diskette
2 when prompted.
3. Press <Enter> when the Welcome to Setup screen appears.
4. From the Device Detection screen, choose S to manually select a SCSI
adapter. Choose option S from the next screen as well.
5. Insert the PERC 2/DC Drivers and Utilities disk for Windows NT 4.0
in the floppy drive and press <Enter> twice.
6. From the Driver Display screen, choose PERC 2/DC NT SCSI DRIVER and
press <Enter>.
7. Press <Enter> from the Driver Confirmation screen.
8. Insert Windows NT 4.0 diskette 3 in drive A: when prompted and press
<Enter>. Press Page Down from the Licensing Screen. Press <F8>
to agree.
9. Press <Enter> from the Hardware Detection screen if the hardware
matches.
10. Choose C from the Partitions and Available Space to create a partition.
11. Choose the partition size and press <Enter> to create the partition.
12. Highlight the SCSI drive that Windows NT 4.0 will install to and press
<Enter>. From the File System Selection screen, choose the file system
to be installed.
Please Wait While Hard Drive Is Being Formatted
appears. From the Directory Installation screen, choose the directory
where Windows NT 4.0 is to be installed and press <Enter>.
13. Next
Insert PERC 2/DC Disk
appears. Insert the PERC 2/DC Windows NT Drivers and Utilities Disk in drive A: and press <Enter>.
Please Wait While Files Being Copied To Hard Disk
appears. After installation completes,
Please Remove All Disks And CDs From Drives
appears. Remove all disks and CDs and press <Enter>. The server reboots.
Please Insert Windows NT CD-ROM Into CD-ROM Drive
appears. Insert the CD-ROM and click on OK.
14. Click on Next from the Windows NT 4.0 Setup Wizard screen. Type the
Name and Organization as prompted and click on Next.
15. Locate the CD-KEY on the back of the CD case and enter it. Click on
Next.
16. From the Licensing Modes screen, choose the licensing mode and click
on Next.
17. From the Computer Name screen, type in a unique computer name and
click on Next.
18. From the Server Selection screen, choose the server type and click
on Next.
19. From the Administrator Account screen, type the Administrator password
and confirmation. Click on Next.
20. From the Emergency Repair Disk screen, specify Create Emergency Repair
disk and click on Next.
21. From the Component Selection screen, choose the list of components
to be installed. Click on Next.
22. From the Network Setup screen, specify if this computer will be connected
to a network. Click on Next.
23. Specify if the Microsoft Internet Information Server should be installed.
Click on Next.
24. From the Adapter screen, choose the network adapter to be used. Click
on Next.
From the Protocol screen, choose the desired protocol. Click on Next.
From the Network Services screen, choose the desired services to be installed.
Click on Next.
At the Confirmation screen, choose to install the selected components. Click
on Next.
25. From the TCP/IP screen, choose the options for your installation.
Click on next. From the Software Installation Complete screen, click on next
to restart the server.
Configuring Windows NT SNMP Support
1. Insert the first PERC 2/DC installation diskette in drive A:.
2. Choose the Start button and then Run. Type:
A:Setup
and click on the OK button.
3. Choose SNMP Agent and follow the directions on the screen
Dell recommends that you disable the FlexRAID Virtual Sizing option before
you install Windows NT 4.0. Enable FlexRAID Virtual Sizing after you install
Windows NT 4.0 If you install Windows NT 4.0 with Virtual Sizing enabled, the
Windows NT 4.0 Setup utility may show a larger partition size for installation
than is actually available.
Note: Because of a Windows NT 4.0
limitation, you cannot enter a partition size larger than 4096 MB while installing
Windows NT 4.0.
Calculating Drive Partitions and Volumes
Use one of the following formulas to calculate the
size of the partition or volume:
Note: In the following formulas,
N is the number of drives. A 2 GB drive is 2038 MB, a 4 GB drive is 4088 MB,
a 9 GB drive is 8568 MB.
- RAID0: N x drive = x MB of free space.
For example: if you have two 2 GB drives in a RAID0 configuration, the calculation
is:
2 x 2038 = 4076 MB
- RAID1: N/2 x drive size = x MB of free space.
For example: if you have two 2 GB drives in a RAID1 configuration, the calculation
is:
2/2 x 2038 = 2038 MB
- RAID5: N-1 x drive size = x MB of free space.
For example: if you have three 2 GB drives in a RAID5 configuration, the
calculation is:
(3-1) x 2038 = 4076 MB
You must create a partition on the entire virtual space. However, volumes can
be created using only the total capacity of the actual physical drives.
Adding a drive to an existing array can only be achieved if:
- Virtual Sizing is enabled in the PERC 2/DC BIOS Configuration Utility.
- The FlexRAID Power Fail Option is enabled.
- Only one logical drive can be configured per array.
- Drives can only be added to RAID levels 0 and 5.
- New drives are added to the SCSI bus or to a SCSI subsystem.
Adding Drives under Power Console
1. On the main Power Console screen, verify that the drive added displays
on the correct channel.
2. On the logical drive display bar above the channel display, right click
on the Logical Drive icon.
3. Select "Advanced Menu" and then "Add Drive". The "Enhanced Logical
Drive" GUI displays.
4. Click on the drive(s) you wish to add to the existing array. You can
not exceed 8 physical drives in on array. The "Stripe Size" cannot be changed.
5. Change the RAID Level if you desire. Click on "Apply" and the array
will be rebuilt. After the Rebuild is complete the additional space must be
implemented using the Windows NT 4.0 Disk Administrator.
Applying Additional Space to the Windows NT Disk Administrator
1. After the rebuild process, run the Disk Administrator Utility.
2. You should see at least one hard disk drive size of 81917 MB. There
should be a logical drive created prior to the addition of your new drives.
- To apply the new space to Disk Administrator, you can add a new logical drive using:
Create or Create Extended Partition or
Extend "Volume Set"
Adding a new Logical Drive using Create or Create Extended Partition
1. Right click on available space next to the existing logical drive.
2. Select Create or Create Extended.
3. Enter size of the addition space (the capacity of the hard disk drive
that was added).
4. Commit to Changes.
5. Right click on the new partition and format. This is recommended if
using NTFS.
6. The drive is ready to be accessed without rebooting.
Adding a new Logical Drive using Extend Volume Set
This option is available only when using NTFS. It is not available under FAT.
1. Click on the existing partition, then hold down the shift key and right click on available space.
2. From the pulldown menu, select "Extend Volume Set"
3. Enter the total space of both partitions and total size of the volume. For example: If the first partition is 500 MB and the new capacity of the array is 1000 MB, the volume space entered would be 1500 MB.
Note: Windows NT 4.0 will make you
reboot when exiting Disk Administrator.
