Hardware Installation: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller
Hardware Installation: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID
Controller
- Turn off the computer, disconnect from any networks, and remove the
cover.
- Make sure the system board jumper settings are correct. Each RAID
controller card you install requires an available PCI IRQ. Make sure an IRQ is available
for each controller that is installed.
- Install cache memory on the RAID controller card.
 |
NOTES: Disconnect the battery pack before removing or
adding SIMM modules.
A minimum of 4 MB of cache memory is required on the RAID controller and must be installed
before the RAID controller is operational. |
- Configure the jumper settings on the RAID controller.
You can skip this step if you are using the factory settings.
- Set the SCSI termination.
- Set SCSI terminator power (TermPWR).
- Insert the RAID controller in a 5-V PCI expansion slot as shown in the
following graphic.

- Connect the SCSI cables to SCSI devices.
- Set the target IDs for the SCSI devices.
- Install the battery backup
module for cache memory. If power fails, the module provides
backup power for the SIMM banks for a certain length of time depending on the capacity of
the SIMMs.
 |
NOTE: Disconnect the battery pack before removing or
adding SIMM modules.
|
- Replace the computer cover and reconnect the AC power cords. Set up the
power supplies so that the SCSI devices are powered up at the same time as or before the
host computer. Turn on the power to the host computer.
 |
NOTE: If the computer is powered up before a SCSI
device, the device might not be recognized. |
Text similar to the following appears during boot:

Copyright (c) Dell Inc.
Firmware Initializing... [ Scanning SCSI Device ...(etc.)... ]
During initialization, the controller scans SCSI channels. When
ready, text similar to the following appears:
Host Adapter-1 Firmware Version x.xx DRAM
Size x MB
0 Logical Drives found on the Host Adapter
0 Logical Drives handled by BIOS
Press <Ctrl-M> to run PowerEdge BIOS Configuration Utility
The adapter (controller) number, firmware version,
and cache DRAM size (the amount of memory installed) are displayed. The message usually
appears for only a few seconds.
- Run the PowerEdge BIOS Setup, PowerEdge RAID Manager, or PowerEdge RAID Console as needed.
- Install the appropriate software drivers (Windows NT or Novell NetWare ) for the desired operating system(s).
