Cache Memory Installation: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller
Cache Memory Installation: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID
Controller
Adding/Replacing SIMM Modules | Memory Configurations

 |
NOTE: A minimum of 4 MB of cache memory is required.
The cache memory must be installed before the RAID controller is operational. |
J22 is the bank 0 SIMM socket and J18 is the bank 1 SIMM socket. These
sockets accept 72-pin SIMMs ( 36-type), available in sizes from 4 MB 36 to 16 MB
36. Use J22 if you are only using 1 SIMM socket. If you are using both sockets, make sure
that the 2 SIMMs are the same type and capacity.
 |
NOTE: If you use SIMMs with different capacities, the
total cache memory is set to twice the capacity of the smaller of the 2 SIMMs. |
 |
CAUTION: The J2 cable connector on the battery backup module must be
disconnected before you add or remove SIMM modules to or from the RAID controller card. |
- Shut down the operating system properly.
Make sure that cache memory has been flushed. You must perform a system
reset if operating under DOS. When the computer reboots, the RAID controller flushes cache
memory.
- Turn the computer power off, and disconnect the power cables from the
computer.
- Remove the computer cover.
- Disconnect the battery cable connector from the J2 connector shown in the
following figure.

- Remove the RAID controller.
- You can now add or remove SIMM modules from the RAID controller.
- Reinstall the RAID controller in the computer.
- Reconnect the battery cable connector to the J2 connector.
- Replace the computer cover and turn the computer power on.
