Introduction: Quantum Atlas 10K Hard Disk Drive User's Guide

OverviewGeneral FeaturesPerformance ReliabilityVersatility Drive Diagram

Overview

Atlas 10K Disk Drives provide unequaled quality and performance. They are designed to improve the performance of high-end workstations, file servers, and storage systems.

These hard disk drives are non-removable, 3 1/2-inch hard disks and are available with the SCSI interface.  A Quantum Atlas 10K hard disk drive is compatible with systems that provide the SCSI interface.

The innovative design of the Atlas 10K hard disk drives enables Quantum to produce a family of high performance, high reliability drives.

General Features

The Quantum Atlas 10K hard disk drives include the following key features:
  •  9.1, 18.2, or 36.4 GB formatted capacity (512 bytes/block)
  •  MR heads and banded recording for higher overall bit-densities
  • Hardware XOR to automatically detect and correct errors and defects in the data stream for array applications (RAID). Third Party XOR support for Force.
  • Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) Revision 2 support
  •  ORCA (Optimized Reordering Command Algorithm) and tagged command queuing for greater throughput.
  • SCAM-2 (SCSI Configured AutoMatically) Auto ID configuration
  •  Automatic Power Management System with power-saving sub-states
  • Embedded servo system for exceptional head positioning accuracy and long life
  • Advanced Ultra 160/m-LVD, Ultra2-LVD and Ultra SE Multimode SCSI with 68-pin wide connector or 80-pin SCA-2 connector
NOTE: The formatted capacity of your hard disk drive may seem smaller than what you ordered because the operating system reports drive capacity assuming that 1 megabyte (MB) equals 1,048,576 (2^20) bytes while drive manufacturers consider 1 MB to equal 1,000,000 (10^6) bytes.

Performance

  • 5.0 ms average random seek time (READ) and 8.5 ms average access-to-data time for 9.1 and 18.2 GB disks; 5.5 ms second average random seek time (READ) and 8.5 ms average access-to-data time for 36.4 GB disk.
  • 10,000 rpm rotational speed yielding 3.0 ms average latency
  •  2 MB Track-oriented segmented cache buffer with prefetch
  •   Zero latency reads and writes reduce data access time.
  •  Full SCSI 3 compliance 1 (compatible with SCSI-2 and SCSI 1) 1 The drives are in compliance with the SCSI-3 draft proposed ANSI standards as they exist at the time of product release; SCSI-3 features may not be enabled on drives when shipped.

Reliability

  • 1,200,000 (9.1GB), 1,000,000 (18.2GB) and 800,000 (36.4GB)  hours mean time between failure (MTBF) in the field.
  • Automatic retry on read errors
  • Superior data integrity:

  •      352-bit Reed-Solomon quad-burst ECC provides fast on-the-fly correction for small errors and robust software-based correction for larger errors.
EDC internal protection from SCSI bus to media.
  • Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) Revision 2 support
  • Adaptive cache segmentation
  • Reassignment of defective sectors discovered in the field, without reformatting

  •

Versatility

  • Downloadable firmware
