Accessing the Command Line Interface

You can execute the command line interface (CLI) by

• Accessing the CLI from the MS-DOS Prompt
• Accessing the CLI from the Windows NT Start Button
• Accessing the CLI from the Flexible Array Storage Tool Window
• Accessing the CLI from the NetWare Server Console
• Accessing the CLI from the UNIX Prompt

The following sections describe each access method.

Note: The CLI displays status information in the title bar of a DOS command prompt window when it executes an asynchronous command. The status information includes a percent number that indicates percentage completion. Note that no status information appears in the FAST utility's CLI window. On NetWare, the status information appears in a different window. On UNIX, the status information appears at the bottom of the CLI window.

Accessing the CLI from the MS-DOS Prompt

To access the CLI from the MS-DOS prompt, display a Command Prompt window and type afacli in any directory. The path in the Windows NT Registry must include the directory where the controller software is installed for the command to work in any directory. The controller software installation procedure asks whether you want to update the path in the Registry. If you answered Yes to that question, then you can type afacli from any directory. Otherwise, you need to update the path in the Registry yourself or change to the directory where the CLI executable resides prior to running afacli.

Accessing the CLI from the Windows NT Start Button

To access the CLI from the Windows NT Start button, perform these steps. These steps assume that you accepted the default location for the controller software during the installation procedure:

1. Click the Start button and move the mouse cursor to the Programs item. The Programs item displays a number of choices, for example, Dell PERC 2.
2. Move the mouse cursor to the Dell PERC 2 item. The Dell PERC 2 menu displays.
3. Click on the AfaCli program icon on the Dell PERC 2 menu.

Accessing the CLI from the Flexible Array Storage Tool Window

To access the CLI from the Flexible Array Storage Tool (FAST) Window, perform these steps:

1. Start the FAST application by following the instructions presented in the Flexible Array Storage Tool User's Guide and open a controller.
2. Select the Display Command Prompt icon from the Toolbar. This is the icon with the right angle bracket (>).

   Or, select Command Prompt Display from the Window menu.

   In either case, FAST presents a Command Prompt window.

   One benefit of running the CLI from FAST is the command history and recall function (available from the scroll bar).

Accessing the CLI from the NetWare Server Console

To access the CLI from the NetWare server console, type load fastcli at the prompt. The system displays the FASTCMD> prompt, which indicates you can now use CLI commands.

Accessing the CLI from the UNIX Prompt

To access the CLI from the UNIX prompt, display a window and type afacli in any directory. The system displays the FASTCMD> prompt, which indicates you can now use CLI commands. The path in the startup file (.login or .cshrc) must include the directory where the software is installed for the command to work in any directory. See your UNIX documentation for information on setting up directory paths in the .login and .cshrc files.
