System Overview:
Dell PowerVault 660F and 224F Storage Systems Service Manual
The Dell PowerVault 660F and 224F storage systems are external,
flexible, high availability systems that feature 14 Fibre Channel (FC) hard-disk drives
and support JBOD and redundant array of independent disks (RAID). The storage system may
be attached directly to one or two PowerEdge servers, or the connection to servers
may be made via one or two PowerVault 5xF Fibre Channel switches.
This section describes the hardware
features, with emphasis on those features that simplify servicing of the systems. It also
describes software requirements of these storage systems.
- Fourteen 1-inch, FC, 10,000 (10K) revolutions per minute (rpm) and
15K rpm hot-swappable hard-disk drives
- 3U form factor
- Optional one or two Dell Fibre Disk RAID Controllers
- Two hot-swappable loop resiliency circuit/SCSI enclosure services
(LS) modules provide active/passive failover of enclosure services as well as
monitoring and control of Fibre Channel loops
- Two removable option slot modules
- Two redundant, hot-swappable power supply modules
- Two hot-swappable advanced cooling modules (ACMs) with two fans
each for 3-plus-1 fan redundancy
- FC 15K rpm-compliant shielded carrier with a universal design
accommodating 1-inch hard-disk drives
- One single-color and one bicolor light-emitting diode (LED) per
carrier
- Six LEDs on LS modules indicating shelf power, shelf fault, FC
loop A and loop B status, and LS module fault (the bottom
LED is reserved for future use)
- Audible alarm for enclosure events (disabled manually or with
software)
- RapidRails rack mounting kit
Option Slot Modules
The two rear option slots on your PowerVault 660F and 224F may be
configured with one or more modules including: Dell Fibre Disk RAID Controller, copper or
optical I/O expansion modules.
Dell Fibre Disk RAID Controller
The Dell Fibre Disk RAID Controller is supported in either a single
controller or dual controller configurations. A single RAID controller is supported in the
primary slot, option slot 0 (the rightmost slot, as viewed from the back). A second
RAID controller is supported in the secondary slot, option slot 1 (the leftmost slot, as
viewed from the back). Active/active fail-over capability is supported when redundant RAID
controllers are used. The redundant RAID controllers must be installed into the same
PowerVault 660F storage system enclosure and will have shared FC device channels. The RAID
controller also provides a pass-through FC device loop for loop expansion.
The Dell Fibre Disk RAID Controller supports up to 112 hard-disk
drives. The controller also supports single-controller (simplex) configurations and
dual- controller (duplex) configurations for redundancy. In addition, the Dell Fibre Disk
RAID Controller offers the following features:
- Support for 128 megabytes (MB), 256 MB, and 512 MB of
ECC-protected synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM).
- Three Fibre Channel ports, each providing a 1 Gb/sec FC_AL
class 3 interface. These interfaces adhere to the Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop Direct
Disk Attach Profile. The host port supports direct or switch attached connection and the
two remaining ports provide the disk interfaces.
- Host connection is made through a DB 9-type connector. The
controller also has a high-speed serial data connector (HSSDC)-type expansion connector
port that allows additional PowerVault 224F enclosures to be daisy-chained onto a
PowerVault 660F, creating a maximum of 112 hard-disk drives.
- The hot-pluggable controller supports the insertion,
removal, and replacement of hard-disk drives, enclosures, fans, power supplies, and other
system components without shutting down the system.
- In a simplex or duplex configuration, the controller
supports up to 32 data logical unit numbers (LUNs).
- Supports either write-through or write-back data caching.
- Supports a pool of hard-disk drives marked as standby
hot-spare drives.
- Supports hot-swap drive replacement while the system is
online.
- Supports automatic rebuild operation if a physical disk
drive fails in a redundant RAID.
- Supports mixed hard-disk drive capacities and rpm.
I/O Expansion Module Copper
The copper input/output (I/O) expansion module is used for
PowerVault 660F and 224F JBOD applications and to provide FC device expansion from the
Dell Fibre Disk RAID Controller or optical I/O expansion module. The I/O expansion module
has two HSSDC FC connectors. The first HSSDC connector is the primary FC loop input port
and the second HSSDC connector is available for FC loop expansion. A loop-back terminator
is not required since the I/O expansion module will automatically enable the expansion
HSSDC connector when valid FC signals are present on the expansion connector.
I/O Expansion Module Optical
The optical I/O expansion module is used for PowerVault 224F JBOD
applications. The optical FC I/O module allows for longer cable distances with fibre optic
transceivers and cables. The optical cable length supported will be per the optical
transceiver specification.
The 1-Gb/s optical FC I/O expansion module has the SC optical
connector as the FC loop input port. The FC loop expansion is done using the HSSDC
connector.
The storage system chassis simplifies removing and replacing
components. You can replace power supplies, ACMs, LS modules, I/O expansion modules, and
hard-disk drives without removing chassis covers or other components.
