Installing standard Dell OpenManage data management software
Setting up Data Event Monitor to interact with the Windows NT desktop
Removing standard Dell OpenManage data management software
This chapter describes how to perform the following tasks to set up a Dell host as a OpenManage
data management station:
- Install the standard Dell OpenManage data management software: Data Supervisor, Data Event
Monitor, and Data Integrator
- Setup Data Event Monitor to interact with the Windows NT desktop on the management station.
This chapter describes how to perform these tasks, and also how to remove the Dell OpenManage
data management software.

NOTE:
For information about the specific revision of Window
NT software and the array Licensed Internal Code (LIC) that are required for your revision of the
standard Dell OpenManage data management software, see the release notice that shipped with
the software. The release notice also describes any procedure changes to the installation process
for the software revision that you are installing. |
If any revision of the standard Dell OpenManage data management software is installed, remove
it as described in the last section,
"Removing standard Dell
OpenManage data management software," before installing a new revision.
To install standard Dell OpenManage data management software on the management station

NOTE:
Before you begin, ensure that Dell OpenManage
Data Agent for NT is installed and running on at least one host that you plan to configure as a
Data Event Monitor client. |
- At the NT host that you are setting up as the management station, log in as Administrator or the
equivalent.
- If Dell NNM SE is installed on the management station, start it from the Windows NT taskbar by
following the path
Start � Programs � HP OpenView �
NNM Services - Start
- Insert the Dell OpenManage Data Management Station CD into the CD drive.
The installation starts automatically, and after about a minute a Dell OpenManage Data Management
Station window opens and displays the Welcome window shown below.

If you do not see the Welcome window, follow these steps to start the installation:
- From the Windows NT taskbar, follow this path
Start � Run
- When the Run window opens, enter the following program name, and then click the OK button:
drive:\setup.exe
where drive is the letter for the CD drive, which is usually D.
- In the Welcome window, click the Next button.
The Software License Agreement window opens.
- When you have read the license agreement, click the Yes button to accept the agreement
and continue the installation.
The User Information window opens.
- In the User Information window, make sure that the Name and Company entries are correct,
and click the Next button.
The Destination Folder window opens with the following default folder as the directory where the
software will be installed:
C:\Program Files\Dell OpenManage\PowerVault Manager\Data Supervisor
- In the Destination Folder window, either click the Next button to accept the default folder
or enter or select different pathname, and then click the Next button.
The Setup Type window opens.
- In the Setup Type window, select Typical to install all the software required for the management
station.

NOTE:
If you want to select which software to install, select
Custom, and follow the instructions that appear. If you are installing just Data Event Monitor, then
after you select Data Event Monitor, steps 12 through 15 tell you what to do when the Data Event Monitor
Configurator window opens. |
- In the Select Program Folder window, click the Next button to accept the default folder
(Data Supervisor) or select a different pathname, and then click the Next button.
The Data Event Monitor, Data Supervisor, and Data Integrator files are installed.
- When you are prompted to setup so Data Event Monitor can email events, click the OK button.
- Continue to click the OK button in the windows that open until the Data Event Monitor Configurator
window opens.

- In the Default Hosts field, specify a server with arrays to be monitored (called a monitored
client) as follows:

Data Agent for NT must be installed and running on the
host that you specify. |
- Click in the empty field.
- On the highlighted line, enter either a host name or an IP address.
- From the Configurator menu bar, follow this path:
File � Save As

NOTE:
When entering a filename into the Save As window, do
not type the .cfg extension. The tool creates this extension automatically. |
- When the Save As window opens, save the file as eventmon.
You can give the Data Event Monitor configuration file any name and store it in any location, or
use the following default (C:\Program Files\Dell OpenManage\PowerVault Manager\Data Supervisor\Data
Event Monitor\eventmon.cfg) as recommended above.
- Exit the Configurator by following this path from the Configurator menu bar:
File � Exit
- When you are prompted about updating fields, click the Yes button.
- In the Setup Complete window, click the Finish button.
- Remove the Dell OpenManage Data Management Station CD from the CD drive.
You have completed the installation of the standard Dell OpenManage data
management software.
What next?
Continue to the next section, "Setting up the Data Event Monitor to interact with the Windows
NT Desktop."
- From the Windows NT 4.0 taskbar and follow this path:
Start � Settings � Control Panel
The Control Panel window opens.
- In the Control Panel window, double-click the Services icon.
- In the Services window, select the Dell Open Manage Data Event Monitor service, and then click
the Startup button.
- In the Service window, click the check box for Allow Service to Interact with Desktop, and then
click the OK button.
What next?
What you do next depends on whether you want to run Data Event Monitor, which must be running for
you to manage arrays from Dell NNM SE.
If you want to run Data Event Monitor - Continue to
"Running Data Event Monitor" to start
it and customize its configuration as you want. You must run Data Event Monitor if you want to manage
arrays with Dell NNM SE.
If you do not want to run Data Event Monitor - Go to
"Running Data Supervisor" to manage arrays
with Data Supervisor.
You cannot choose to remove individual pieces of the standard Dell OpenManage data management
software, but must remove of all these software pieces that are installed. This means that if you want
to remove some of the installed pieces, you first remove all the installed pieces, and then reinstall
just the pieces that you want.
To remove standard Dell OpenManage data management software from the management station
- At the management station, log in as Administrator or the equivalent.
- If Dell NNM SE is installed on the management station, start it from the Windows NT taskbar by
following the path
Start � Programs � HP OpenView �
NNM Services - Start
- If Data Event Monitor is running, stop it as follows:
- From the Windows NT taskbar, follow this path:
Start � Programs � Dell OpenManage
� PowerVault Manager � Data Supervisor
� Data Event Monitor Configurator
The Data Event Monitor Configurator window opens.
From the Configurator menu bar, follow this path:
Monitor � Stop Monitor
- From the Configurator menu bar, follow this path:
File � Exit
- From the Windows NT taskbar, follow this path:
Start � Programs � Dell OpenManage �
PowerVault Manager � Data Supervisor � Data Management Station
Uninstall
- In the Confirmation window that opens, click the Yes button to confirm the removal of the software.
- When the Dell OpenManage Data Event Monitor Remover window opens, click the OK button.
- In the information windows that open with messages about removing various files, click the OK button.
- In the Remove Program Files From Your Computer window, click the OK button when the uninstall is
completed.
You have completed the removal of the standard Dell OpenManage data management software except
for one or two files in the Data Event Monitor folder
(C:\Program Files\Dell OpenManage\PowerVault Manager\Data Supervisor\Data Event Monitor) and
the Data Event Monitor and Data Supervisor folders. If you want to remove these files and folders,
you must remove them manually.
