About Dell Managed Node software: Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent for NT and Integrator Installation and Operation

OverviewDell Open Manage Data management environments

Overview

Dell Managed Node software consists of

  • Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent for NT
  • Dell OpenManage™ Data Integrator
  • Dell OpenManage™ Data CLI for NT

Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent for NT lets Dell OpenManage™ data management software access Dell PowerVault 650F and 651F storage systems connected to a Windows NT host. The Dell OpenManage™ data management software includes products such as Dell OpenManage™ Data Supervisor, Dell OpenManage™ Data Administrator, or Dell OpenManage™ Data CLI for NT.

Data Agent must run on each host connected to PowerVault 650F or 651F storage systems that you want to manage.

Dell OpenManage™ Data Integrator is required for managing the PowerVault 650F and 651F storage systems using Dell NNM SE software. Dell OpenManage™ Data Integrator consists of two parts: one part that runs on the hosts connected to the storage systems and is a piece of the Dell Managed Node software; and one part that runs on the Dell OpenManage™ data management station and is a piece of the Dell OpenManage™ Data Management Station software.

Dell OpenManage™ Data CLI for Windows NT is a command line interpreter that you can use to configure and manage PowerVault 650F and 651F storage systems if you do not have Dell OpenManage™ Data Supervisor or Dell OpenManage™ Data Administrator. You can run it on the host connected to the storage systems or on a Dell OpenManage™ data management station.

This guide is about the Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent and the part of Dell OpenManage™ Data Integrator that is a piece of the Managed Node software. For information on Dell OpenManage™ Data CLI for NT, refer to the Dell OpenManage Data CLI for NT Installation and Operation Guide (P/N 4967C). For information on the management station part of Dell OpenManage™ Data Integrator, refer to the Dell OpenManage&; Data Supervisor, Event Monitor, and Integrator Installation and Operation Guide (P/N 9867C).

  • Data Agent for Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent for NT
  • Data Agent Configurator for Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent Configurator
  • Data Integrator for Dell OpenManage™ Data Integrator
  • Data CLI for Dell OpenManage™ Data CLI for NT
  • Dell NNM SE for Dell OpenManage™ Network Node Manager Special Edition for HP OpenView
  • Management station for the host running Dell OpenManage™ data management software
  • Managed array for a Dell PowerVault 650F or 651F storage system that is managed by Dell OpenManage™ data management software
  • Array server or server for a host that is connected to a managed arrays and is running Data Agent

Dell Open Manage Data management environments

A management station can also be an array server. If a management station is running Dell NNM SE, it is a Dell NNM SE management station.

Environment without a Dell NNM SE management station

The figure on the next page illustrates a Dell OpenManage™ data management environment in which the management station is not running Dell NNM SE and is not an array server. From this management station, you can manage all the arrays connected to servers on the network using Data Supervisor, Data Administrator, or Data CLI.

Figure 1-1. Environment with a non-Dell NNM SE management station that is not an array server

The figure below illustrates a Dell OpenManage™ data management environment in which the management station is not running Dell NNM SE and is an array server, From this management station, you can manage all the arrays connected to servers on the network using Data Supervisor, Data Administrator, or Data CLI.

Figure 1-2. Environment with a non-Dell NNM SE management station that is also an array server

The data management software runs on the management station and communicates with the Data Agent running on each array server. Data Agent on an array server communicates with the Licensed Internal Code (LIC) running on an array's storage processors (SPs). The data management software and Data Agent communicate with each other over a TCP/IP network. Data Agent and the LIC communicate with each other using a SCSI protocol over a Fibre Channel arbitrated loop (FC-AL). The figure below illustrates how these components interact.

Figure 1-3. Interrelationships between components in an environment with a non-Dell NNM SE management station

Environment with a Dell NNM SE management station

To monitor managed arrays and start Data Supervisor or Data Administrator from a Dell NNM SE management station, you must have the following software:

On each array server

  • Windows NT SNMP Service, which provides the Windows NT SNMP extendable agent
  • Dell SNMP extensions, which is the part of Data Integrator for an array server

On the Dell NNM SE management station

  • Dell NNM SE
  • Dell NNM SE extensions, which is the part of Data Integrator for the management station
  • Data Event Monitor

The figure on the next page illustrates a Dell OpenManage™ data management environment in which the management station is running Dell NNM SE and is not an array server, From this Dell NNM SE management station, you can use Dell NNM SE to monitor all the arrays connected to servers on the network. When you want to configure a managed array or view detailed status information about a managed array's hardware, you can start Data Supervisor or Data Administrator from Dell NNM SE.

note.gif (1135 bytes) NOTE: The Part of Data Integrior on the Dell NNM SE management station is the Dell NNM SE exetensions; the part on a Windows NT server is the Dell SNMP extensions.

Figure 1-4. Environment with a Dell NNM SE management station that is not an array server

The data management software running on the Dell NNM SE management station communicates with the Data Agent running on each array server in the same way that is does on a non-Dell NNM SE management station.

The Dell NNM SE extensions, which are part of Data Integrator on the Dell NNM SE management station, let the Dell NNM SE find arrays on array servers that it discovers on the network.

Data Event Monitor on the Dell NNM SE management station communicates with Data Agent on each array server about status changes in a server's managed arrays. It passes the array status information it receives to the Dell NNM SE using generic SNMP traps. Data Event Monitor communicates with Data Agent on each array server using the Windows NT SNMP extendable agent with the Dell SNMP extensions over the TCP/IP network. Data Event Monitor also communicates with the Dell NNM SE TCP/IP network. The figure below illustrates how these components interact.
