Hardware and software requirements

The Dell host on which you run Data Agent must have the following software:

  • Windows NT 4.0
  • Simple TCP/IP Services installed and configured with a TCP/IP network connection to any remote management station.

The Dell host on which you run the array-server part of Data Integrator must have the following software:

  • Data Agent
  • Windows NT SNMP Service.
note.gif (1135 bytes) NOTE: For information about the specific revision of the host operating system (OS) software and the storage-system Licensed Internal Code (LIC) software that is required for your revision of the Data Agent, see the release notice that shipped with the Data media. The release notice also describes any changes to the installation process for the software revision that you are installing.

If a version of the Managed Node software is already installed, remove it as described on Removing the Managed Node software before installing a new version.

To install the Managed Node software on a Windows NT server

  1. At the server, log in as Administrator or the equivalent.
  2. Insert the Data Managed Node CD into the server's CD drive.

The installation starts automatically, and after about a minute the Managed Node window opens and displays the Welcome screen.

Figure 2-1. Managed Node Welcome screen

If you do not see the Welcome screen, follow these steps:

    1. From the Windows NT task bar, follow this path

      Start ® Run

    2. In the Run window, enter the following program name, and then click the OK button:

      drive:\setup.exe

where drive is the letter for the CD drive, which is usually D.

  3. In the Welcome window, click the Next button.
  4. In the Software License Agreement window, read the license agreement and then click the Yes button to accept the agreement and continue the installation.
  5. In the User Information window, make sure that the Name and Company entries are correct, and click the Next button.
  6. In the Choose Destination Location window, either click the Next button to accept the default location or enter or select a different pathname, and then click the Next button.

C:\Program Files\Dell OpenManage™\PowerVault™ Manager\Data Managed Node is the default location directory where the software will be installed.

  7. In the Setup Type window, select Typical to install all the Managed Node software.
note.gif (1135 bytes) NOTE: If you want to install just Data Agent and/or Data Integrator, select Custom and follow the instructions that appear on the screen. When the Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent Configurator window opens, go to step 11 to configure Data Agent.

The Installing SNMP Service window opens saying that you must have SNMP Service for Windows installed, configured, and running.

  8. If the SNMP Service is installed, configured, and running on the server, click the Next button in the window; otherwise, do not click the Next button until after you have installed, configured, and started the service.
  9. In the Select Program Folder window, either click the Next button to accept the default folder or enter or select a different folder, and then click the Next button.

Data Managed Node is the default folder where the Data Agent program icons will be installed.

The Data Agent, Data CLI, and SNMP (Integrator) files are copied to the server.

  10. Click the OK button in the information windows that open until the Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent configurator window opens.

You will use the Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent Configurator window to configure Data Agent by creating the Data Agent configuration file (agent.config).

  11. Figure 2-2. Dell OpenManage™ Data Agent Configurator window

  12. In the Data Agent Configurator window, do the following:
    1. In the Host Description field, enter an optional description of the server.

You could include such information as the server's hostname, its physical location, or its function.

    2. In the Contact Person field, enter an optional description of whom to contact when problems occur with the server or its arrays.

You could include a person's name and phone number.

    3. Click the Auto Detect Array button (shown below) to make entries in the Devices table.

The Auto Detect option automatically fills in the an entry in the table for one communication channel through one LUN to each SP in each array connected to the server. This option is the easiest way to enter device information into the configuration file.

    4. In the Privileged Users list, make an entry for each user allowed to configure the arrays connected to the server.

The format of a user entry is:

      user@hostname

      where

user is the name of a user on the management station
identified by hostname. Use Administrator or a Windows NT
      user name.
hostname is the name of a host from which user will manage and
configure arrays. If hostname is not in the Domain Name
Server (DNS), you must use the IP address of the server
      instead of hostname.

Any user that can log onto the server can monitor the operation of its arrays. A privileged user can both monitor the operation and change the configuration of the server's arrays.

If you want to allow a user to configure and monitor an array from two different remote hosts, you must add two entries into the array server's configuration file (for example, JW@server1, and JW@server2).

  13. Save your entries in the Data Agent Configurator window by following the menu path:

    File ® Save As

  14. In the Save As window, enter agent.config in the File name field, and then click the Save button.
note.gif (1135 bytes) NOTE: The configuration file can have any name and be stored in any location. C:\Program Files\Dell OpenManage™\PowerVault™ Manager\Data Managed Node\Data Agent\agent.config is our recommended name.
  15. A window will open stating that the registry key does not exist. Click the Yes button to create the registry key.
  16. In the window asking you to install the agent service, click the Yes button.
  17. In the confirmation window, click the OK button to confirm that the agent service has been installed.
  18. In the window asking you to restart the agent service, click the Yes button.
  19. Click the OK button in the information windows that open until you return to the Data Agent Configurator window.
  20. Exit Data Agent Configurator by following the menu path:

    File ® Exit

  21. In the confirmation window, click the Yes button to confirm exiting the Data Agent Configurator.
  22. Click the OK button in the information windows that open until the Setup Complete window opens.
  23. In the Setup Complete window, click the Finish button.

You have completed the installation of the Data Managed Node software.

note.gif (1135 bytes) NOTE: Any user who can access the management station can change or delete the Data files that you just installed. If you want to change permissions on these files, refer to the Data Releases Notice(s) for information about what the permissions should be.

What next?

Removing the Managed Node software

You cannot choose to remove individual pieces of the Managed Node software, but must remove all the Managed Node software pieces that are installed. This means that if you want to remove some of the installed pieces, you first remove all the installed pieces, and then reinstall just the pieces that you want.

To remove the Managed Node software

  1. At the Windows NT server running the Managed Node software that you want to remove, log in as Administrator or the equivalent.
  2. From the Windows NT taskbar, follow the path:

Start ® Programs ® Dell OpenManage ® PowerVault™ Manager ® Data Managed Node ® Data Managed Node Uninstall
