Operating System Support

Remote Install version 1.2 supports the same operating systems as Remote Install version 1.1. However, Remote Install version 1.2 adds additional language support for Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 on both image servers and target systems.

Table 1 summarizes the operating system support of the system components that carried over from Remote Install 1.1.

Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, and Web Edition Yes Yes Yes
Red Hat® Linux 7.3 No Yes Yes
Red Hat Linux 9  No Yes Yes

For more information about operating system support for various components of Remote Install, see "System Requirements."

NOTE: Remote Install version 1.2 supports additional languages. See "Operating System Language Support" for details about how the operating system language of an image server or target system affects your use of Remote Install features.

Operating System Language Support

The Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 operating systems support different languages for Remote Install image servers  and target systems. This section lists the languages that are supported for image server operating systems, and target system operating systems, as well as combinations of supported languages for image servers and the target systems they manage.

NOTE: Operating systems such as Windows Server 2003 Web Edition that do not have their own language versions support the multilanguage user interface (MUI) pack. The Standard and Enterprise Editions of Windows Server 2003 also support the MUI.
NOTE: For correct display of the Remote Install interface, ensure that the Web browser you use to view Remote Install is set to English. See "Changing Browser Language Settings" for instructions.
NOTE: You may use alphanumeric characters plus the underscore and hyphen to enter text in Remote Install, and you may use periods in domain names. You may not use double-byte characters and special characters such as ã or æ.

Operating System Languages for Image Servers

The image server is the system on which the Remote Install application is installed. Table 2 shows languages supported for an operating system on an image server. The languages supported are the same for Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003.

Operating System Languages for Target Systems

Target systems are systems managed by the image server. Remote Install can now manage target systems running localized operating systems if the image server is running Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003. However, the Remote Install software interface is always displayed in English. Table 3 shows languages supported for target system operating systems. Target system operating system languages include English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.

Operating System Languages for Image Servers and the Target Systems They Manage

The operating system language on an image server determines the languages supported on target systems.

For each language that is supported on an image server operating system, Table 4 shows the corresponding languages that are supported for target systems managed by the image servers running the same operating system.

Upgrading to Remote Install Version 1.2

To upgrade to Remote Install version 1.2, see "Setting Up the Image Server" and "Setting Up Target Systems." The procedures in those sections have been updated to include upgrades and new installations.

Existing Images Automatically Imported

Reinstalling the same version of Remote Install on an image server erases the records of stored images and configurations in the Remote Install database, but the image files remain in the file system. If you create storage share directories that use the same paths as were used in the previous installation, Remote Install automatically imports the images it finds in those directories. If you have problems recovering image data after a reinstallation, see "Recovering Remote Install Images From a Corrupted Image Server Database." Installing a new version, such as installing Remote Install version 1.2 on an image server that has Remote Install version 1.1 installed, preserves stored images and configurations.

Upgrading Target Systems

You do not have to upgrade a target system until or unless you want to capture an image from it. You can continue to manage and deploy images captured with Remote Install versions 1.0 and 1.1.

Supported Version Combinations

If you are concerned about having the latest features of Remote Install available on your network, begin by upgrading your image server. The image server is where you install the primary Remote Install application, and upgrading the image server ensures that any new systems you deploy with that image server are deployed with the latest version of Remote Install.

Updating the image server does not require you to update the target systems it manages because a later version of an image server can manage an earlier version of the agents on the target systems.

Target systems must be managed by equal or higher versions of Remote Install image servers. You cannot use an image server running Remote Install version 1.0 or 1.1 to manage a target system running Remote Install 1.2.

Table 5 shows the compatibility of the image server and agents on the target system for each version of Remote Install.

NOTE: Upgrade the image server before you upgrade the target system. Most new software features are on the image server.
