Checklist

Make sure the following items are in the box when you unpack it:

  • Protective case for storing the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card and its antenna
  • Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card
  • SIM tray
  • Antenna
  • Quick Start Guide
  • CD-ROM
    The CD contains; drivers, software, documentation and a readme file.

System Requirements

This section lists the network subscriptions, hardware and software requirements for running the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card.

Network and Subscription

The network subscription you use in conjunction with your Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card depends on the subscriptions your network operator can provide. Contact your network operator or service provider to make sure the options you require are available. Make sure that data options are included in your subscription, as these are usually optional services.

Mobile operators often provide a number of connectivity options via GPRS such as WAP and Internet, so check that the Internet or the VPN service you require is enabled for your subscription.

The functionality of the different subscriptions available from networks operators are discussed below:

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)

GPRS is a new network connection which provides "always on" mobility. The connection set up is fast and, once connected, applications may send and receive data whenever required. In today's GPRS networks, Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card receives data at speeds up to 53.6 kbps and transmits at speeds up to 26.8 kbps.

Short Message Service (SMS)

The PC can send and receive SMS text messages using the SMS Messages screen in the TrueMobile GPRS Manager, see See TrueMobile GPRS Manager SMS Messages Screen, for more details.

Hardware

You will need:

  • A PC that has the minimum specification recommended by Microsoft to run the version of Windows installed on it.
  • A 16 bit type II PC Card slot.
  • Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card
  • A SIM Card
Software

You will need:

  • Microsoft® Windows® 2000® or Microsoft® XP Operating Systems.
  • Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card CD-ROM.

Installation

The Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card CD-ROM contains the software required to operate your Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card.

The software is simple to set up and operate, but before you begin you will need to make sure that the services you require are included on your SIM card subscription. For an explanation of the services that are available see See Network and Subscription. Contact the network operator that supplied you with your SIM card and request that the specific services (GPRS, or SMS) you require are added to your subscription.

The CD-ROM contains the following software:

  • TrueMobile GPRS Manager and drivers
  • User Documentation
  • On-line Help
  • ReadMe text file containing the latest information about the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card

Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card Hardware Set Up

Collect your Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card, antenna and SIM card together.

Note: The SIM card may already be inserted in the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card, if this is the case skip steps 1 and 2 below.

  1. Pull the SIM tray open and place the SIM card into it, push the tray back into the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card. Make sure the tray is closed properly before proceeding.
  2. The cut corner of the SIM card must be placed into the SIM tray as demonstrated below, the SIM contacts should face upwards.
  3. Connect the antenna to the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card.

Note: If the antenna is obstructing your use of the keyboard you can turn it to a horizontal position and still connect to the network.

Note: If you want to use your other PCMCIA port you can remove the antenna while you insert the other card. Any active connections will be terminated when the antenna is removed.

Note: When Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card isn't in use it is recommended that you store it in the protective carrier box provided. The unit, especially the antenna could be damaged if it remains in PC.

Installing the Software

Note: Make sure your Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card is not inserted.

Note: If the device was purchased with a new Dell system then the software will already be installed. If you have verified that it is installed, jump to step 4 below.

Note: An Administrator account is required to install the software on your system.

  1. Insert the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card CD-ROM in your CD drive.
  2. After a few seconds a Dell splash screen is displayed.
    If the CD-ROM does not autorun, select Start Run and type D:\Setup.exe into the Run dialog . (Where D is your CD drive.)
  3. The InstallShield Wizard for TrueMobile GPRS Manager opens; follow the instructions on screen. When installation is complete click Finish.
  4. Insert the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card into the portable PCs PC card slot. Make sure the Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card is fully inserted. A beep signals that your computer has recognised it.

  5. Your portable PC acknowledges that new hardware has been inserted and installs the necessary driver. This process will take a few seconds.
  6. Select Programs Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card TrueMobile GPRS Manager
  7. to start using your Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card.
  8. Dell TrueMobile 5100 Tri-band GPRS PC Card and the TrueMobile GPRS Manager are ready for use.
