Share Drives and Printers on your Network

After you set up each computer on your network, you can assign the drives and printers from each computer that will be available on the network. Follow these steps:

  1. Double-click the Share Drives & Printer icon on your desktop to start the Share Drives & Printer program.

  2. The Share Drive/Printers Local window appears. The Private Resource window on the left lists drives and printers on the computer you're working on. To share those drives and printers with your network, highlight them and click Shared. The highlighted drives and printers appear in the Shared Resource window on the right.

  3. When you finish designating drives and printers on this computer, click OK. Now you can go to your other computers and designate their drives and printers to share on the network.

    To use the shared drives and printers on your computer, follow the steps in the Use Drives and Printers section below.


Use Drives and Printers on Your Network

After you assign drives and printers from each computer, you can access a drive or printer on the computer in your family room from the computer in your bedroom. Follow these steps:

 

  1. Double-click the Share Drives & Printer icon on your desktop to start the Share Drives & Printer program.

  2. The Share Drive/Printer Network window appears. Click the Network tab. The Network Resource window on the left lists drives and printers available on the network. To make those drives and printers available on your computer, highlight them and click Use it >>. The highlighted drives and printers appear in the Used Resource window on the right.



    The drives and printers in the Used Resource window are now available to your computer. Click OK.

  3. Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.



    You should see the names of drives, folders, printers, and computers on your network. A folder on another computer might appear on your screen as Docs on 'Joe's Laptop' (R:). Docs is the folder name; Joe's Laptop is the name of the computer containing the Docs folder; R is the drive letter that your computer uses for the Docs folder on Joe's Laptop.
