Introduction: Dell Wireless Home Network

OverviewInstallation Requirements Setup CD-ROM Disk

Overview

Dell's Wireless Home Network allows you to set up a Wireless Network in your home. Computers on your home network can access the Internet through a single Internet connection, share printers, and share data without being tethered to wires or cables.

When you set up your network, the first step is to set up the computer you use to connect to the Internet. Then you'll set up the other computers you want to put on your network.

Base Station Network

If your Dell Wireless Home Network includes a Base Station and two or more external or internal Wireless Network Cards, then you have a Base Station Network. Follow the installation steps for a Base Station Network.

Wireless Network Card Network

If your Dell Wireless Home Network does not include a Base Station, but consists of two or more external or internal Wireless Network Cards, then you have a Wireless Network Card Network. Follow the installation steps for a Wireless Network Card Network.

Installation Requirements

Before you begin installation, make sure that you have the following items:

For the Base Station Network:

  • Base Station unit
  • Base Station power supply
  • Wireless Network Cards
  • Card Antenna (if your system comes with an internal Wireless Network Card)
  • Setup CD
  • Quick-Start Guide

If any of the above items are missing from the CardBus PC Card package, contact your Home Network supplier.

For the Wireless Network Card Network:

  • Wireless Network Cards
  • Card Antenna (if your system comes with an internal Wireless Network Card)
  • Setup CD
  • Quick-Start Guide

You'll also need:

  • A working connection to the Internet. If you haven't already set up an Internet account for your computer, do so before setting up your Home Network.
  • Two or more IBM-compatible computers with CD-ROM drives and Windows 95, 98, or NT

During network setup, you'll be asked to provide:

  • A name for each computer you put on your network. Computer names should describe who the computer belongs to, or where the computer is. A stationary computer in your family room, for example, might be called Family Room PC.

You'll also need:

  • A blank 3.5" diskette. You can save your network settings onto the diskette and use it to set up the other computers on your network.

Additional requirements:

Processor 486 or higher
Disk space 10 MB or more
Memory 32 MB or more
