Step 1. Installation of Hardware: Dell TrueMobile 1100 Series 11Mbps Wireless LAN Adapter

Before You StartInstalling the Wireless LAN AdapterDriver Installation

Before You Start

The system you are installing your wireless LAN Adapter into must have a PCMCIA Type II or III slot.

Obtain the following from your System Administrator:
Notes:
1) Dell cannot provide you with this information, as it is specific to your network.
2) SSID - The Service Set Identifier (SSID) controls access to a given wireless network. This value MUST match the SSID of any/all Access Points that you want to communicate with. If the value does not match, you are not granted access to the system. It can be up to 32 characters long. The SSID is case sensitive. You can have up to three SSID's: SSID2 and SSID3 are optional, and are for use if you have the need to roam between up to three distinct networks. For example, the wireless networks of two separate buildings could have different SSID's, and a network administrator might need a laptop that could be used for both buildings without having to re-configure the card each time.
3) WEP - This is a form of data encryption used to scramble the data sent over the airwaves. You must set the WEP Key in the client to match the WEP Key used by the Access Point, because you will ONLY Associate to Access Points that have a matching WEP Key. WEP can be enabled or disabled and thus is optional.

  • A Client Name for your wireless card
  • An SSID(s) for your wireless card. There can be up to 3 SSID's:
    • SSID1
    • SSID2
    • SSID3
  • WEP Key information for your wireless card:
    • WEP Key 1
    • WEP Key 2
    • WEP Key 3
    • WEP Key 4
    • WEP Key Size
    • Transmit Key (Key 1, 2, 3, or 4)
    • WEP Key type (Temporary or Persistent)
  • For Windows Networking, your Computer Name and Workgroup Name
  • For your network account, your User Name and Password
  • Your IP address (unless using a DHCP server)

Also be sure to have:

  • The Dell TrueMobile 1100 Series TM1100PC 11Mbps Wireless LAN Adapter (See picture below)
  • The Dell TrueMobile 1100 Series CD
  • A laptop with a CD-ROM drive and a PCMCIA (PC Card) Type II or III slot

If any item is damaged or missing, contact Dell Computer Corp. Contact information can be found at the bottom of the Troubleshooting section.

Installing the Wireless LAN Adapter

This section provides instructions for installing the wireless LAN adapter on a computer using Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. The PC Card can be connected to a PC Card Type II or III slot.

Note

Caution: The following procedures and physical connections apply generally to normal and conventional PC Card slots. In the cases of custom or non-conventional equipment, be alert to possible differences in PC Card slot configurations.

Caution: Do not force the PC Card into the PC Card slot. Forcing it will damage both the PC Card and the slot. If the PC Card does not go in easily, remove the card and reinsert it.

Note

NOTE: The PC Card slot will be on the left or right side of the computer, depending on the model.
