Upgrading in the Recommended Sequence

1. Back up the hard-disk drive.

CAUTION: Back up the contents of the hard-disk drive before installing Windows 95 to prevent data loss.

2. Update your BIOS.
3. Install Windows 95.
4. Update the system utilties.


Updating the BIOS

By updating the BIOS, the computer can use the Plug and Play functions of Windows 95.

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Connect the computer to the AC adapter and install a charged battery.
3. Insert the BIOS upgrade diskette into the diskette drive.
4. Turn on the computer, and follow the directions on the screen.
5. When the message

Done! -- Press any key to reboot 
appears on the screen, remove the diskette from the diskette drive.
6. Press any key to reboot the computer.
The computer restarts with the updated BIOS.

NOTE: If Windows 95 was installed before the BIOS was updated, follow these steps after completing step 6.

   a.  Click the Start button and then point to Settings.                                                
                                                                                                         
   b.  Click Control Panel.  The Control Panel window appears                                            
                                                                                                         
   c.  Double-click the System icon.  The System Properties window appears.                              
                                                                                                         
   d.  Click the Hardware Profiles tab.  A list of hardware profiles appears.                            
                                                                                                         
   e.  Click Original Configuration if it is not already selected.                                       
                                                                                                         
   f.  Click Delete to remove the Original Configuration profile and then click OK.                      
                                                                                                         
7. Back up the hard-disk drive if it has not already been backed up and then install Windows 95.


Updating the System Utilties

To take advantage of Windows 95 capabilities, update the system utilties.

NOTE: Upgrade the BIOS and install Windows 95 before updating the system utilities.

1. Turn on the computer. Windows 95 should be active.
2. Insert the utilties diskette into the diskette drive.
3. Click the Start button.
4. Click Run20000004.gif
5. Type

a:\setup
, and then click OK.
The system utilities are automatically updated.


Creating a Startup Diskette

Create a startup diskette with the application programs, files, and valuable data stored on the hard-disk drive. These files on the startup diskette can be used to start the computer and to run diagnostic tests to solve problems.

NOTE: One blank, formatted diskette is needed to create the startup diskette.

1. Click the Start button and then point to Settings.
2. Click Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs Properties windows appears.
4. Click the Startup Disk tab. The Startup Disk information appears.
5. Click Create Disk20000004.gif
6. Follow the instructions on screen to complete the creation of the startup diskette.
