Accessing Programs

To access the program groups and program items in Windows 95, follow these steps:

1. Click the Start button and then point to Programs.
Program groups appear as folders in the Programs menu.
2. Click a folder or program.
Many Dell programs and utilities are located in the Dell Accessories folder.
This new method of accessing programs is similar to the Program Manager in Windows 3.x.

Accessing the Control Panel

To access the Control Panel in Windows 95, follow these steps:

1. Click the Start button and then point to Settings.
2. Click Control Panel to view a window containing system setup icons.
3. Double-click an icon to see the settings that can be changed for that item.

Backing Up Dell-Installed Software

Dell recommends that original diskette copies, or program diskette sets, be created of Dell-installed software. These diskettes are needed for reconfiguring or reinstalling Dell-installed software.

Use Dell DiskMaker to create program diskette sets. Clicking the Start button, point to Program 20000001.gif Dell Accessories, and then click Dell DiskMaker.

NOTE: The Microsoft Create System Disks utility cannot be used to make program diskette sets of Dell-installed software. Use Dell DiskMaker for this purpose. However, the Microsoft Create System Disks utility can be accessed via Dell DiskMaker in order to make Windows 95 system diskettes.


Managing Files

Windows 95 provides simplified file management and browsing with Windows Explorer and My Computer. These 2 tools are similar to the File Manager in Windows 3.x.

Running the Computer in MS-DOS® Mode

To run the computer in MS-DOS mode, follow these steps:

1. Click the Start button and then click Shut Down....
Options for shutting down the computer are displayed on screen.
2. Click Restart the Computer in MS-DOS Mode.
3. Click Yes to restart you computer in MS-DOS mode.

Shutting Down the Computer

CAUTION: To prevent data loss, it is important that the following shutdown procedure be performed before the computer is turned off.

To shut down the computer, follow these steps:

1. Exit any applications.
2. Click the Start button and then point to Shut Down....
Options for shutting down the computer are displayed. The SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER option is automatically selected.
3. Click Yes to shut down the computer.
A message states the system is shutting down.
Once the system has shut down, another message states that it is now safe to turn off the computer.
4. Turn off the computer.

NOTE: Dell Latitude™ XP and XPi notebook computers will automatically turn off once the shutdown process is complete.


Using Microsoft® Fax

To set up a folder and a personal address book for Microsoft Fax, follow these steps:

1. Verify that the modem is installed.
2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Mail and Fax icon.
The Microsoft Exchange Properties Settings window appears.
4. Click Add.
The available information services for sending and receiving messages are displayed.
5. Deselect all information services except Microsoft Fax.
The Location Information window appears.
6. Enter the country, area code, and outside line access number.
7. Click Modem or Network Fax to specify how to send and receive messages.
If Modem is clicked, identify the type of modem or select it from the types listed on screen. Then enter the port that will be used with the modem.
If Network Fax is clicked, enter the directory name for sending and receiving messages.
8. Click Yes or No to specify whether Microsoft Fax should answer every incoming call.
If Yes is clicked, specify the number of rings.
The Identification window appears.
9. Enter the name, country, and fax number.
The Personal Address window appears.
10. Enter the path to the personal address book, or click Next to have one automatically created.
The Personal Folder window appears.
11. Enter the path to the personal folder, or click Next to have one automatically created.
12. Click Yes or No to add Microsoft Fax to the Inbox.
If Yes is clicked, Microsoft Fax will start up automatically each time to run Windows 95.
13. Click Finish once all the information is entered.
The system returns to the Microsoft Exchange Properties Settings window.
14. Click Close.
Now faxes can be sent, received, scheduled, composed, and managed.
