1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources. Disconnect any peripheral device cables from the back panel.
2. Remove the cover-mounting screw on the top of the chassis.

3. Disengage the 2 snaps on the bottom of the chassis.
4. Slide the cover straight back 1 or 2 inches, and tilt the cover up and back to pivot the cover from the
chassis.

5. To reinstall the cover panels, follow steps 1 through 4 in reverse.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Remove the front bezel.
Facing the computer's front panel, press in on the 2 tabs at the top and on both sides of the bezel.

Then tilt the bezel, and pull it away from the chassis, disengaging the 2 tabs at the bottom of the
bezel.

4. To replace (or reinstall) the bezel, follow steps 1 through 3 in reverse.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover and front bezel. See Removing/Replacing the Cover and Removing/Replacing the Front
Bezel.
3. To remove a 5.25-inch front-panel insert, hold the bezel (while facing its interior). Reach around to
the front of the bezel, and pop out the front-panel insert.

4. To remove a 3.5-inch front-panel insert, hold the bezel while facing its interior. Press against the
tab on each side of the insert until the insert snaps out.

5. To replace (or reinstall) the insert, follow steps 1 through 3 or 4 in reverse.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover and front bezel. See Removing/Replacing the Cover and Removing/Replacing the Front
Bezel.
3. Remove the metal insert. See Removing/Replacing Front-Panel Inserts.
Removing a Metal Insert
To remove 1 metal insert from a pair of metal inserts, use a 1/4-inch nut driver to unscrew the 4 screws
that secure the inserts to the computer. After lifting the inserts away from the system unit, bend them
at the perforation line until they snap apart.
To remove an individual metal insert, hold the insert in place while using the 1/4-inch nut driver to
unscrew the 2 screws that secure the insert to the computer.
4. To replace (or reinstall) a metal insert, hold the insert in place, and use a 1/4-inch nut driver to
screw in the screws that secure the insert to the computer.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Disconnect any cables from the expansion card.
4. Unscrew the retaining screw from the card-mounting bracket.
5. Grasp the card by its corners, and carefully pull it out of its expansion-card connector.
6. To replace (or reinstall) a card, follow steps 1 through 5 in reverse.
Replacing an Expansion Card
7. To verify that the computer is operating correctly, insert a diagnostics diskette into drive A and run
the System Set Test Group in the diskette-based diagnostics.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. While pushing outward on each of the SIMM socket's metal tabs, rotate the SIMM in the direction of the
arrows until it is released from its socket.
Removing the SIMM
4. To replace (or reinstall) a SIMM, position it in its socket (either angled or upright). While holding
the SIMM's card-edge connector firmly against the SIMM socket, rotate it in the direction of the arrows
until it snaps into place.
Replacing SIMMs (Angled and Upright)
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals. and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Remove any installed expansion cards that prevent access to the microprocessor.
4. If the microprocessor has a retention clip, remove it from the microprocessor/heat sink assembly.
Press on the back end of the clip to release it.

5. Push outward and then upward on the microprocessor-socket release lever to rotate it to its fully
vertical position.

6. Lift the microprocessor/heat sink assembly out of its socket.
7. To replace (or reinstall) the microprocessor, follow steps 1 through 6 in reverse.
Orient the replacement microprocessor/heat sink assembly in the same position as the original one and
carefully insert its pins into the socket. After the microprocessor is fully seated in its socket,
return the microprocessor-socket release lever to its original position. Then reinstall the
microprocessor retention clip.
8. Enter system setup, and confirm that MICROPROCESSOR correctly identifies the installed microprocessor.
9. Insert the diagnostics diskette into drive A, and run the System Set Test Group to verify that the
microprocessor is operating correctly.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover and front bezel. See Removing/Replacing the Cover and Removing/Replacing Front Bezel.
3. Disconnect the DC power cable and interface cable from the back of the drive.
4. Press in on the drive rail tabs on each side of the drive, and slide the drive out of its bay.
Removing a Drive From a 5.25-Inch Bay
5. To replace (or reinstall) the drive, follow steps 1 through 4 in reverse.
If the drive does not already have drive rails attached, attach a drive rail to each side of the drive.
Attaching Drive Rails
When the drive slides into its drive bay, make sure that both drive rail tabs snap into place. If they
do not, adjust the position of each drive rail by loosening the screws and sliding the drive rail forward
or backward, as needed. Tighten the screws again, and replace the drive in the bay.

1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover and front bezel. See Removing/Replacing the Cover and Removing/Replacing Front Bezel.
3. Disconnect the DC power cable and interface cable from the back of the drive.
4. Unscrew the 2 screws that secure the front of the 3.5-inch drive bracket to the computer.

5. Slide the 3.5-inch drive bracket toward the back of the computer to disengage the 6 mounting tabs on the
bracket form the slots at the top of the drive bay.
6. Unscrew the 2 screws on each side of the bracket, and slide the drive out of it.

7. To replace (or reinstall) the drive, follow steps 1 through 6 in reverse.
When reconnecting the interface cable, orient the cable so that the red strips on the cable matches pin
1 on the drive's interface connector.

3. Disconnect the power and interface cables from the backs of all hard-disk drives.
4. Remove the drive-bracket mounting screw, and then raise the bracket away from the chassis.

6. Slide the drive out of the hard-disk drive bracket.

1. Turn on the computer, and press <DEL> when the monitor displays the following message during the
boot routine:
Press Del Key to run SETUP.
2. Verify that DISKETTE DRIVE A and DISKETTE DRIVE B in the system setup program are set correctly for
diskette drives.
3. If the configurations are incorrect, make the corrections in the system setup program and reboot.
4. Insert a diagnostics diskette into the boot drive, and run the Diskette Drive(s) Test Group to verify
that each diskette drive operates correctly.
Verifying Tape Drive Operation
1. Enter system setup, and verify that DRIVE 0 and DRIVE 1 are configured correctly.
2. If the configurations are incorrect, make the corrections and reboot.
3. For a replacement drive, partition and logically format the drive. Restore the user's files (if
possible) to the drive.
4. Insert a diagnostics diskette into the boot drive, and run the Hard-Disk Drives (Non-SCSI) Test Group
(for SCSI hard-disk drives, run the SCSI Devices Test Group) to verify that the hard-disk drives operate
correctly.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Disconnect the DC power cable connectors (P1 through P7) from the system board and from any drives.
4. Remove the front bezel. See Removing the Front Bezel.
5. Remove the screw that secures the power-supply ground wire to the chassis, and remove the 2 screws
that secure the power button assembly to the front bezel.
6. If necessary, remove the 3.5-inch drive bracket.
7. Slide the retaining channel that secures the power switch cable to the bottom of the drive cage
toward the back of the computer.
8. Disconnect the power and interface cables from the connector(s) on the back of any drives(s)
installed in the hard-disk drive bracket.
DC Power Cables
9. Remove the drive-bracket mounting screw that secures the hard-disk drive bracket to the computer's
back panel, and raise the bracket away from the power supply.
10. Hold the hard-disk drive bracket up and out of the way, remove the 2 screws that secure the power
supply to the computer's back panel and the 2 screws that hold the power supply to the chassis, and
lift the power supply out of the computer.
11. To replace (or reinstall) the power supply, follow steps 1 through 10 in reverse.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals. and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Disconnect the keyboard and mouse interface cables from their connectors on the back panel.
4. Remove any installed expansion cards.
5. Disconnect all cables from the system board.
6. Remove the 6 screws that secure the system board to the chassis.
7. Lift the system board up to release it from the 3 plastic standoffs, and remove the board from the
computer.
8. To replace (or reinstall) the system board, follow steps 1 through 7 in reverse.
For a replacement board, transfer the SIMMs and microprocessor chip to the replacement board. After
the cables have been reconnected and expansion cards reinstalled, fold the cables out of the way so
that they cannot catch on the computer cover or block the airflow.
9. Enter system setup, and verify that the system is configured correctly.
10. Insert a diagnostics diskette into drive A, and run the System Set Test Group in the diskette-based
diagnostics to verify that the system board operates correctly.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals. and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Disconnect any peripheral device that is connected to the cable assembly's I/O connector on the back of
the computer.
4. Disconnect the cable assembly from its interface connector on the system board.
5. Remove the 2 screws that secure the cable assembly's I/O connector to the computer's back panel.
6. Lift the cable assembly out of the computer.
To remove the serial-port cable assemblies, first remove the screw that secures the hard-disk drive
bracket to the back of the computer and lift the bracket out of the way.
7. To replace a cable assembly, follow steps 1 though 6 in reverse.
8. Insert a diagnostics diskette into drive A, and run the Serial Port Test Group or Parallel Port Test
Group (as appropriate) in the diskette-based diagnostics to verify that the system operates correctly
with the replacement cable installed.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Remove the front bezel. See Removing the Front Bezel.
4. Disconnect the speaker cable from its connector on the system board.
5. Pull the speaker straight out of its preformed bracket in the card guide assembly and the mounting hole
in the front panel of the computer.
6. To replace (or reinstall) the speaker, follow steps 1 through 5 in reverse.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover and the front bezel. See Removing/Replacing the Cover and Removing the Front Bezel.
3. Disconnect any cable(s) connected to any expansion card installed in an expansion slot, and remove the
expansion card.
4. Disconnect and remove the speaker. See Removing/Replacing the Speaker.
5. Remove the 2 screws that secure the power push-switch assembly to the front panel of the computer, and
move the power push switch out of the way.
6. Disengage the card guide assembly by pressing inward on the 2 mounting tabs that secure the assembly to
the front panel.
7. To remove the assembly, disconnect the cables for the hard-disk drive access indicator assembly, the
power indicator assembly, and the reset push-switch assembly from the system board.
8. To replace (or reinstall) the card guide assembly, follow steps 1 through 7 in reverse.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Remove the front bezel. See Removing the Front Bezel.
4. Disconnect the cooling fan cable from the J1A1 connector on the system board.
5. Unscrew the screw holding the cooling fan to the chassis, and remove the fan.
Removing the Microprocessor Fan
6. To replace (or reinstall) the cooling fan, follow steps 1 through 5 in reverse.
For proper airflow, the replacement fan must be oriented in the same direction as the one that was
removed. Locate the airflow arrow on one edge of the fan, and orient the fan with the arrow pointing
toward the interior of the computer.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Disconnect any cable(s) connected to any expansion card installed in an expansion slot, and remove the
expansion card.
4. Remove the front bezel. See Removing the Front Bezel.
5. Disconnect the reset button cable from the reset button connector on the system board.
6. Thread the cable through the ferrite cylinder attached to the card guide.
7. Use a small screwdriver to push the reset push switch through its bracket in the card guide and into the
interior of the computer.
8. To replace (or reinstall) the reset button assembly, follow steps 1 through 7 in reverse.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect all the AC power cables from
their power sources.
2. Remove the cover. See Removing/Replacing the Cover.
3. Disconnect the hard-disk drive access or power indicator assembly from its connector on the system
board.
4. Thread the cable through the ferrite cylinder attached to the card guide.
5. Use a small screwdriver to push the hard-disk drive access or power indicator assembly through its light
pipe on the card guide and into the interior of the computer.
6. To replace (or reinstall) these assemblies, follow steps 1 through 5 in reverse.
