The procedures in this section are applicable to both the
desktop and mini tower systems unless specifically noted
otherwise.

NOTE: To replace parts, follow the
steps below in reverse. |
Removing the Cover
Desktop
Removing the cover
- Turn off the power and unplug the power cable.
- Face the front of the chassis.
- Loosen the cover-mounting screw/nut that secures the
cover to the back of the computer.
The screw/nut remains captive.
- Place both hands (palms down) on the top cover near each
of the rear corners.
- Using your index fingers, push inward on the 2 cover
release latches, slightly press down on the cover, and
slide the cover 1 inch toward the back of the computer.
- Lift the cover up off the computer.
Mini Tower
Removing the cover
- Turn off the power and unplug the power cable.
- If the system is a mini tower, lay the system unit on its
right side with the chassis foot off the edge of the work
surface to allow the unit to lay flat.
- Face the front of the chassis.
- Loosen the cover-mounting screw/nut that secures the
cover to the back of the computer. The screw/nut remains
captive.
- Place both hands (palms down) on the top cover near each
of the rear corners.
- Using your index fingers, push inward on the 2 cover
release latches, slightly press down on the cover, and
slide the cover 1 inch toward the back of the computer.
- Lift the cover up off the computer.
Removing/Replacing
the Front Bezel
- Remove the cover.
- Press the 3 tabs on the top and side of the desktop or mini tower chassis to
release the bezel latches.
- Swing the top (desktop) or side (mini tower) of the bezel
away from the chassis, and disengage the 3 retaining
hooks on the bottom (desktop) or side (mini tower) of the
bezel.
Removing/Replacing the Plastic Front-Panel Inserts
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Press the 2 tabs on the
right side of the front-panel insert, which is attached
to the drive cage, to release the panel latch.
- Swing the front-panel insert outward to disengage the
retaining hook on the left side.

the Drive Cage

NOTE: The drive cage is the same in both the
desktop and mini tower system units. Mount the drive cage
in the mini tower system unit so that the drives are
horizontal when the mini tower unit is upright (with the
5.25-inch drive being the top drive). |
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Note the location and orientation of all cables attached
to the drives installed in the drive
cage. Then disconnect the cables.
- Remove the screw that secures the drive cage to the
chassis.
- Slide the drive cage forward approximately 1 inch, and
lift it up and away from the chassis.
Removing/Replacing
a 5.25-Inch Drive
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Remove the
drive cage and drives as an assembly.
- Remove the 3 drive-mounting
screws, and slide the drive out of the bay.
 |
NOTE: When sliding the new drive into its drive
bay, make sure that both drive rail tabs snap into place.
If they do not, adjust the position of each drive rail by
loosening the screws and sliding the drive rail forward
or backward as needed. |
Removing/Replacing
an Upper 3.5-Inch Drive
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Remove the
drive cage and drives as an assembly.
- Remove the 2 drive-assembly
mounting screws, and slide the drive out of the
bay.
- Remove the 2 drive-bracket mounting screws, and remove
the drive bracket from
the drive.
Removing/Replacing a Lower 3.5-Inch Drive (Mini Tower Only)
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Remove the
drive cage and drives as an assembly.
- Remove the 3 drive-mounting
screws from the left side and bottom of the drive
cage, and slide the drive out of the bay.
Removing/Replacing the 3.5-Inch Diskette Drive
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Disconnect the power cables and interface cables from the
back of the 3.5-inch diskette drive.
- Press the 2 drive-release tabs
on each side of the drive, and then slide the drive out.
Removing/Replacing
a Hard-Disk Drive
Primary hard-disk drive:
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Disconnect the cables from the back of the drive.
- Remove the 2 mounting screws.
- Lift the hard-disk drive up out of the card guide
assembly to remove it.
When reinstalling a primary hard-disk drive, be sure the
circuit board is facing the front of the chassis.
Secondary hard-disk drive:
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Disconnect any cables from the back of the drive.
- Remove the 2 drive-assembly mounting screws.
- Slide the drive assembly toward the back of the chassis
and lift it out.
To remove the secondary hard-disk drive from the drive
bracket, remove the screw from the right side of the hard-disk
drive, and then pivot the bracket
away from the drive.

NOTE: When reassembling the
hard-disk drive into the bracket, be sure the two tabs
are in the mounting holes on the left side of the drive. |
Removing/Replacing
the Power Supply
- Remove the cover.
- Disconnect the power cables from the power supply, system
board (J8M1 and J9L1 connectors), any drives, and any
expansion cards.
- Support the power supply while removing the 2
power-supply mounting screws
from the back of the chassis and the 1 mounting screw
inside the chassis.
- Remove the power supply from the chassis.
Removing/Replacing the Microprocessor Fan Assembly
- If your system is a mini tower system, place the system
unit on its right side with the chassis foot off the edge
of the work surface to allow the system unit to lay flat.
- Remove the cover.
- Disconnect the microprocessor fan cable from the CPUFAN
connector on the system board.
- At the back of the chassis, maintain upward pressure on
the 2 release buttons,
lift the fan assembly out of the chassis.
Removing/Replacing
an Expansion Card
- Remove the cover.
- Disconnect any cables from the expansion card, noting the
location of each connector and the orientation of any
cables attached to the expansion card.
- Remove the retaining screw
from the card-mounting bracket.
- Grasp the expansion card by its corners, and carefully
pull it out of its expansion-card connector.
Removing/Replacing
the Card Guide Assembly
- Remove the cover.
- Disconnect any cables connected to all full-length
expansion cards installed, and remove these expansion
cards.
- Remove
the 3.5-inch diskette drive.
- Remove
the primary hard-disk drive.
- If present, remove the
secondary hard-disk drive.
- Disconnect the control-panel cable from the J10E1
connector on the system board.
- Press inward on the 4 mounting tabs that secure the card guide assembly to the
front panel, and press down on the tab at the back of the
card guide assembly.
- Remove the card guide assembly, including the
control-panel cable.
Removing/Replacing
the Control-Panel Board
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the
front bezel.
- Remove
the card guide assembly.
- Press on the mounting tab
to release the control-panel board from the card guide
assembly, and remove the control-panel board.
Removing/Replacing
a SIMM
- Remove the cover.
- While pushing outward on each of the SIMM socket's metal
tabs, rotate the SIMM
downward until it is released from its socket.
- To replace or reinstall
a SIMM, align the SIMM with the slot in the center of the
socket, with the cutout toward the back of the
chassis, and press upward slowly until the SIMM snaps
into place.
Removing/Replacing the Heat Sink Assembly and Microprocessor
 |
WARNING: The microprocessor chip
can get extremely hot during system operation. Ensure the
chip is cool before touching it. |
- Remove the cover.
- Remove the heat-sink retention
clip from the microprocessor/heat sink assembly.
Press on the folded part of the clip with a small
screwdriver to release it.
- Push outward and then upward on the microprocessor-socket release
lever to rotate it to its fully vertical
position.
- Lift the microprocessor/heat sink assembly out of its
socket.
Ensure the release lever is in the vertical position
before installing a chip. Be sure to orient the
replacement chip in the same direction as the chip
removed. Hook the microprocessor securing clip over the
socket tab nearest the release lever pivot, and then snap
it over the tab on the other side of the socket.
Removing/Replacing
the Battery
- If possible, enter the system setup program and make a
printed copy of the screens for a record of the
configuration information, which may be lost during the
battery replacement.
- Remove the cover.
- Remove
any expansion cards that restrict access to the
battery.
- Pry the battery out of
its socket with a blunt, nonconductive object.
When replacing the battery, ensure the side labeled
+ is facing up.
Removing/Replacing
the System Board
- Remove the cover.
- Disconnect any cables attached to the port connectors on
the I/O panel.
- Disconnect all internal cables from the system board.
The cables attached to the Primary IDE, Secondary IDE,
and Floppy connectors each have 2 latches securing them
to the system board. Press the latch on each end of the
cable connector, and pull to release the cable from the
system board.
- Remove
any expansion cards.
- Remove the
3.5-inch diskette drive and the secondary
hard-disk drive.
- Remove the screws that
secure the system board to the chassis.
- Lift the system board out from the plastic standoffs, and remove the
board from the system unit.
When installing the new
system board in the computer, push the system board
against the back of the chassis so that the system board
makes firm contact with the I/O gasket to prevent EMI
leakage.
