Installing/Removing Memory

Memory Installation Guidelines:

  • The 4 SIMM sockets can accommodate from 4 to 64 MB of RAM.
  • Supported SIMM sizes are 4 and 16 MB, rated at 70 ns or better.
  • SIMMs are 32-bit (72-pin) nonparity.
  • Install the smaller SIMMs in the first sockets, beginning with bank 0.
  • Do not leave any blank sockets between SIMMs.

Removing and Replacing SIMMs

Removing a SIMM

  1. Spread the inner metal tabs of the SIMM socket apart just far enough for the SIMM to disengage from the socket (it should pop out slightly).
  2. Then lift the SIMM away from the socket.

Installing a SIMM

If replacing existing SIMMs, temporarily remove any SIMMs installed in front of those being replaced.

  1. Hold the SIMM so that the cutout points toward the center of the system board, and so that the SIMM's edge connector aligns with the slot in the center of the SIMM socket.
  2. Insert the SIMM's edge connector firmly into the SIMM socket.
Hold the SIMM angled up at about 45 degrees and press the SIMM's edge connector into the socket.
Pivot the SIMM down until it clicks into place in a vertical position.
The metal tabs at each end of the socket snap into place around the SIMM and the retention pegs snap into the holes at the end of each SIMM.
  3. If the system memory capacity changed as a result of replacing SIMMs, enter the System Setup program and verify that the System Memory category displays the correct amount of installed memory.
  4. Reboot the system from a diagnostics diskette, and run the RAM Test Group to test all SIMMs.
