Initializing a System Drive Initializing a System Drive

All system drives created must be initialized before they can be used. This process fills the drives with initialized data and synchronizes the redundant (mirror or parity) array. A failure to initialize a system drive can manifest itself in several ways. For example, the drive might not function properly, the drive might not be able to boot, the drive might not be able to install the operating system, the drive might fail the consistency check, and so on. To avoid these troubles, all of the system drives need to be initialized at least once, immediately after they are created. Any change in the size of system drives or packs will immediately warrant a system drive initialization.

When INITIALIZE SYSTEM DRIVE is selected in the MAIN MENU, a screen similar to Initializing System Drives is displayed. It lists all of the system drives on the left side. One or more system drives can be initialized simultaneously. First, select all of the newly added or created system drives by moving the cursor to the system drive to be initialized, and then press <ENTER>.

The selected system drives are indicated by a check mark before the word Sys on the system drive box. Once the proper system drives are selected, move the cursor to the START box at the bottom and press <ENTERRRR. This opens up a final confirmation window, as shown in Starting the Initialization Process . When the user confirms the operation, system drive initialization begins.

Initialization in Progress shows a screen with two system drives being initialized simultaneously. A progress bar is shown for each system drive being initialized. Once the initialization is complete, a message to that effect is displayed. Press any key to return to the MAIN MENU.

NOTE: Once the system drive initialization is started, it cannot be aborted.
