Hard-Disk Drive Bracket and Damper Clip Replacement: Dell OptiPlex 4xxLe (4XXDL)

Hard-Disk Drive Bracket and Damper Clip Replacement: OptiPlex 4xxLe (4XXDL)

The damper clip prevents the hard-disk drive from vibrating. The bracket for the lower hard-disk drive must first be replaced with a different bracket before the damper clip can be installed or replaced. To remove and replace the lower hard-disk drive bracket assembly, follow these steps.

NOTE: An upper hard-disk drive bracket assembly may be present and can remain attached to the lower hard-disk drive bracket assembly until you are instructed to remove it in step 6.
  1. Remove the computer cover.

  2. Disconnect the interface cable(s) and DC power cable(s) from the back of the drive(s).

  3. Remove the mounting screw that secures the lower hard-disk drive bracket assembly to the front-panel drive cage.

  4. If there is a plastic securing tab on the expansion-card cage, press the tab and tilt the drive(s) slightly to release the drive(s).

  5. Slide the drive assembly(s) forward slightly to release the drive bracket tabs from the back of the computer. Then lift the assembly(s) out of the computer.

  6. If the computer has an upper hard-disk drive bracket assembly, remove it. Other wise, proceed to step 7.

Unscrew the three screws that secure the upper drive-bracket assembly to the lower drive-bracket assembly. Place the upper drive-bracket assembly aside.

  7. Remove the lower hard-disk drive from its bracket.

Place the assembly upside down on the work surface and remove the four screws that secure the lower drive to the bracket.

  8. Install the hard-disk drive on the replacement hard-disk drive bracket.

Use the four screws that were removed in step 7 to attach the hard-disk drive to the replacement bracket.

  9. Affix the damper clip to the bracket flange.

The two clip retainers must snap into the two damper-clip retainer holes on the replacement-bracket flange.

  10. If the computer has an upper drive-bracket assembly, reattach the upper drive-bracket assembly to the lower drive-bracket assembly. Otherwise, proceed to step 11.

Place the upper drive-bracket assembly on top of the lower drive-bracket assembly. Use the three screws that were removed in step 6 to secure the upper drive-bracket assembly to the lower drive-bracket assembly.

  11. Install the assembly (with the replacement bracket and the hard-disk drive[s]) in the computer.

  12. Insert the two tabs on the back of the lower drive-bracket into the two slots on the back of the chassis. Then lower the drive bracket assembly to its normal position, and secure it to the back of the drive cage (using the drive-bracket mounting screw).

  13. Reconnect the interface cable(s) and DC power cable(s) to the back of the drive(s).

  14. Replace the computer cover.

  15. Reconnect the computer and peripherals to their power sources.

  16. Turn on the computer and all peripherals.
