Text Modes | Graphics Modes
The built-in VGA subsystem can display both text modes and
graphics modes. Text modes use only text characters, although
many of the characters are suitable for creating simple line
drawings. Graphics modes are used for complex drawings and
graphical user interfaces, but these modes also allow text
characters to be created in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Extended-video modes provide resolutions beyond those
contained in the original VGA standard. Some application programs
require video drivers to take advantage of the extended-video
text and/or graphics modes. Load each driver before using it for
its corresponding application program. The application program
may also need to be configured to use the new driver. Consult the
application program's documentation to find out how to configure
the program and where to place the driver on the hard-disk drive.

NOTE: If a VGA expansion card is
installed in the computer, reset the jumper labeled
"EVGA" to disable the built-in VGA subsystem. |
For multifrequency monitors running the Monitor Select utility
(monitor.exe), the flicker that occurs when an application
program uses high-resolution video modes can also be
significantly reduced.
