Installing the drivers in Windows 98SE

NOTE: If you ordered your Dell computer with the Actiontec Modem already installed and configured no additional setup steps are necessary. This information is provided in case you need to reinstall or update the drivers for your modem, if, for instance, you change operating systems. Before installing or updating the drivers, please go to the Dell website to download them.

  1. Windows will detect the modem and install generic, "native" drivers that come with Windows 98SE.
  2. On the Windows task bar, click Start. From the Start menu, choose Run. Type the path to the Driver Update utility and press ENTER.
  3. An introductory dialog box will appear. Close all other programs and click OK.
  4. The utility will install the drivers, removing old installations if necessary.
  5. Right-click the icon for My Computer and select Properties from the menu that appears.
  6. The System Properties dialog box will appear. Click the Device Manager tab and then double click "Modem" from the given list.
  7. The modem will now be listed as "Actiontec MD560RD V92 MDC Modem".


Installing/Updating the Drivers in Windows ME

NOTE: If you ordered your Dell computer with the Actiontec Modem already installed and configured no additional setup steps are necessary. This information is provided in case you need to reinstall or update the drivers for your modem, if, for instance, you change operating systems. Before installing or updating the drivers, please go to the Dell website to download them.

  1. Windows will detect the modem and install generic, "native" drivers that come with Windows ME.

Setting The Modem's Dialing Properties For Various Locations

Depending on where you are dialing from, it may be necessary to change the country setting of your modem. Select the appropriate operating system for your computer and change the settings for the modem's dialing properties.

Setting Up a Location in a System Running Windows 98SE

NOTE: Close all communications programs before making a country selection change.

  1. Click the Start button, click Settings, then click Control Panel. Double-click the Modems icon.The Modems dialog box appears.
  2. Click Dialing Properties.
  3. Click OK.
  4. The Dialing Propertieswindow appears. Click the My Locations tab, if it is not already in front.

  6. Click New. In the I am dialing from: window replace New Location with the name you wish to give to these particular settings. Later, when you wish to restore these settings after using others, click on this name in the drop-down menu.
  7. In the drop-down menu under I am in this country/region: select the country from which you will be using the modem.
  8. Change the other settings as needed.
  9. If you make an error, make sure that the name of the setting containing the problem is selected in the I am dialing from window. Click Remove and go back to Step 3 to begin reconstructing that Location.
  10. When finished configuring your settings, Click OK. Windows automatically saves the different Locations.


Setting Up a Location in a System Running Windows ME

NOTE: Close all communications programs before making a country selection change.

  1. On the Start menu, click Settings, then click Control Panel. Double-click the Telephony icon.
  2. The Dialing Properties window will appear Click on the My Locations tab, if it is not already in front.
  3. Click New. In I am dialing from: replace "New Location" with the name you wish to give to these particular settings. Later, when you wish to restore these settings after using others, you can just choose this name from the I am dialing from: list (where you are entering it now.)
  4. To configure the Country setting, in the I am in this country/region: list, select the country from which you will be using the modem. Change the other settings, as needed.
  5. When finished configuring your settings, Click OK. Windows will automatically save the different settings for each named location.


Setting Up a Location in a System Running Windows 2000 and Windows XP

NOTE: Close all communications programs before making a country selection change.

  1. On the Windows desktop, click the Start button. On the Start menu, click Settings, then click Control Panel. Double-click the Phone and Modem Options icon. The Dialing Properties window appears. Click Edit.
  2. In the Location name: window, replace New Location with the name you wish to give to these particular settings. Later, when you wish to restore these settings after using others, click on this name in the drop-down menu.
  3. In the Country/Region: drop-down menu select the country in which you will be using the modem.
  4. Change the other settings in this dialog box as needed.
  5. If you make an error, make sure that the name of the setting containing the problem is selected in the Location name window and edit your settings as necessary.
  6. When finished configuring your settings, Click OK. Windows automatically saves the different Locations.


Inserting the RJ11 Cable

  1. Insert the RJ11 cord into the RJ11 slot on the side or back of your PC.
