V.92 Features

V.92 Compatible Features Implemented and Supported:

V.92 is a dial-up modem specification from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) that introduces several new features designed to improve modem performance, including Modem-on-Hold (MOH), QuickConnect, and PCM upstream data transmission.

In addition, V.44, a new standard for data compression that allows higher data compression rates than the previous standards, is also included.

1) Modem-on-Hold (MOH) – Allows you to receive an incoming telephone call while you are connected to the Internet on the same phone line.

NOTE: Call-Waiting service from your phone company and V.92 support from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) are required. (For a more detailed description of MOH, see NetWaiting Applet, MOH Requirements, and How MOH Works.)

2) QuickConnect – Reduces the time it takes for your computer to connect to your ISP. With Quick Connect, the modem identifies the phone line characteristics during a data connection, saves this information, and uses this data to compare line quality variables when making a future connection with the same server modem. The amount of time saved varies on each phone line.

3) PCM Upstream Increases the upstream data rates from the user to the ISP, which reduces the upload times for large files and e-mail attachments. A maximum upstream data rate of 48 Kbps is possible, compared to the previous V.90 standard and maximum upstream data rates of 31.2 Kbps.

Because of the modem unreliable connections with some current ISP Servers when PCM Upstream is supported,  this feature is disabled by default on this modem.

V.44 Compression

A new ITU standard designed to improve data compression rates between your computer and the ISP. These higher compression rates, which increase between 20 and 60 percent on average and as much as 200 percent, mean more data can be downloaded in the same amount of time. Since HTML text files are highly compressible, the most significant improvement will be noticed when browsing and searching the web.

MOH Program "NetWaiting"

The V.92 modem includes the NetWaiting applet that allows you to receive incoming caller information, including the caller's phone number and/or name in most cases, and then answer the voice call while maintaining an active Internet connection for the length of time allowed by your ISP.

MOH Requirements

  • Call Waiting Service

Your telephone company must offer call-waiting service in order for you to be notified of a call while you are online. Check with your telephone company to determine if call-waiting service is available in your area.

  • ISP Supports V.92

Your ISP must support V.92 in order for MOH to work. Check with your ISP to determine if V.92 is supported. If your ISP supports V.92, the ISP can also identify the Call On Hold Time or the time allowed for the Internet connection to be placed on hold before Internet connection is disconnected.

  • Caller ID on Call Waiting (Type II Caller ID, Optional)

With Caller ID on Call Waiting, the MOH applet identifies who is calling while you are online. Check with your telephone company to determine if Caller ID on Call Waiting is available in your area.

How MOH Works

When you receive an incoming call and your computer is connected to the Internet:

1) A pop-up window appears and identifies that you have received a call. If you have the optional caller ID on call- waiting, the phone number and/or name of the caller also appears in most cases. At that point, you have a limited amount of time predetermined by your ISP to decide whether or not to accept or decline the call.

2) You decline or accept the call.

a) If you decline the incoming call, your connection to the Internet is not affected.

b) If you accept the incoming call, your Internet connection is placed on hold and a timer is displayed showing the time remaining (determined by your ISP) before your Internet connection is disconnected. If you finish your voice call before the time expires, you can return to your Internet connection. If the timer expires during your voice call, the Internet connection is disconnected and you must reconnect to go back online.

NOTE:  Downloads in progress are cancelled if you choose to answer the phone and hold the Internet connection.

If you accept the incoming voice call and the timer expires during your voice call, the Internet connection is disconnected and you must reconnect to go back online.
