Troubleshooting: Promise® FloppyMAX LS-120 Controller Board User's Guide

Problems and Solutions
Limitations of the LS-120 Media
Interrupting the FloppyMAX BIOS during Load

Problems and Solutions

Problem Solution
The non-ATAPI devices on the FloppyMAX are in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode in Windows 95a. Since Windows 95a does not support the tertiary/quaternary IDE port addresses that the FloppyMAX uses, any non-ATAPI device attached to this card will revert to DOS handling methods.
Windows 95a does not see the ATAPI device on the FloppyMAX. ATAPI devices require driver support in order for them to operate. Since Windows 95a does not support the tertiary/quaternary IDE port addresses that the FloppyMAX uses, any ATAPI device attached to this card will not be seen by this OS.

Limitations of the LS-120 Media

  1. Due to the way MS-Backup for DOS and MS-Backup for Windows 3.1x physically accesses the LS-120 floppy, it is necessary to type in the complete DOS path to the backup destination rather than to select the drive from the options list. To do this, enter the Backup menu in MS-Backup, choose the location to Back up from, then click MS-DOS Drive and Path and type in the floppy drive letter to back up to and the path (for example, b:\backup).

  2. Making a system disk using 120MB media in Windows 3.1x with File Manager is not possible due to the way Windows 3.1x accesses the floppy drive. To make a system disk with 120MB media, start a DOS session in Windows (or exit Windows) and use the DOS format utility.

  3. Formatting 120MB media in Windows 3.1x with File Manager returns Probable non-DOS disk error when using chkdsk.exe to verify the integrity. Scandisk.exe will test the floppy properly. To make a system disk with 120MB media, start a DOS session in Windows (or exit Windows) and use the DOS format utility.

  4. Other limitations of the LS-120 media include the following:
    1. The diskcopy utility cannot be used in DOS, Windows 3.1x, or Windows 95 due to the large capacity of the media.
    2. Making a system disk is not possible under Windows 3.1x. In Windows 95, the Create System Disk option from the Startup Disk tab under Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs will not work.
    3. Booting is not possible from DOS or Windows 3.1x.

Interrupting the FloppyMAX BIOS during Load

With the jumpers on the FloppyMAX set to their default positions and the LS-120 connected to the FloppyMAX controller board as a master, perform the following step:

  1. When booting the computer, right before the FloppyMAX BIOS attempts to load, hold down BOTH <Shift> keys.

The FloppyMAX will start to display information about what it is detecting in your system. Please record this information for troubleshooting purposes.

The most common error message resulting from this procedure is No Interrupt next to the FloppyMAX port address. This means that the IRQ the FloppyMAX is set to is in use by another device in the system. Change the IRQ on the FloppyMAX to an IRQ that is available, or make IRQ 9, 10 or 11 available for use by the FloppyMAX.

NOTE: This procedure can be done as long as the FloppyMAX BIOS is enabled. The jumpers do not have to be set to the defaults, although troubleshooting is easier if they are.
