Firmware Installation ========================= The firmware update utility on this diskette is DOS-based and named AFU.EXE. It offers both interactive and command line modes.
Performing the PERC 3/Di Firmware Upgrade in Interactive Mode ------------------------------------------------------------- The AFU interactive mode is entered by issuing the AFU command with no command line switches. This mode simplifies the firmware update process for PERC 3/Di when one or more PERC 2/3 controllers are present.
To update the firmware using the AFU interactive mode, follow these steps:
1. Shut down your system.
2. Reboot the system with the diskette labeled: DELL PERC 3/Di Firmware Disk 1 of 2
***NOTE: If the system has not been set up to boot from the diskette, please read system documentation for instructions on how to set this up.
3. At the DOS prompt, enter the following command and press ENTER:
A:\> AFU
This starts the AFU in interactive mode. The AFU will detect the integrated PERC 3/Di and any installed PERC 2 controllers and present them for selection in a list.
4. If only PERC 3/Di is detected then AFU will select it. Otherwise, using the arrow keys, highlight PERC 3/Di and select it by pressing the space bar and press ENTER.
5. A "Select an Operation" menu will be presented. Select the following option and press ENTER:
Update flash image
6. The AFU will issue the following message:
Update from the flash image file in directory: A: Change the directory if necessary, then use the TAB key to select the OK box, and press ENTER.
7. AFU will issue following message:
Reading flash image file (Build xxxx)...
8. AFU will issue following message after reading flash image from first diskette:
Please insert disk labeled "PERC 3/Di Firmware disk 2"
9. Insert the second diskette and press ENTER.
10. AFU will complete reading the flash image and issue following message:
AFU is about to update firmware on controller(s) Dell PERC 3/Di *** PLEASE DO NOT REBOOT THE SYSTEM DURING THE UPDATE *** This might take a few minutes. Select OK to continue.
11. Select the OK box, then press ENTER. AFU will proceed to update the firmware and issue following message:
Writing PERC 3/Di integrated flash image to controller 0 ...
This message will be followed by additional progress messages. When the flash update has completed, you will see this message:
Controller #0 Dell PERC 3/Di Flash image was updated and verified successfully
***NOTE: If you selected multiple controllers, AFU will prompt you to insert the diskette after the successful update of first controller. Please insert firmware diskette 1 for second controller.
12. Press any key, then press the ESC key to exit AFU. Remove any diskettes from the drive and reboot the system.
***NOTE: System must be rebooted after performing firmware update on PERC 3/Di before attempting any access to drives attached to the controller.
Performing the Controller Firmware Upgrade in Command Line Mode --------------------------------------------------------------- AFU in command line mode returns its exit status (zero for success or non-zero for an error) in the DOS environment variable ERRORLEVEL.
The following instructions explain how to upgrade the controller firmware using AFU command line mode:
1. Shut down your system.
2. Reboot the system with the diskette labeled:
DELL PERC 3/Di Firmware Disk 1 of 2
**Note: If the system has not been set up to boot from the diskette, please read system documentation for instructions on how to set this up.
3. At the DOS prompt, specify the following command and press ENTER:
A:\> AFU list
This command displays a list of the controllers in your system. Take note of the controller(s) you would like to update and its number (or numbers if there are more than one). Verify that the controller you wish to update is identified.
4. To upgrade the firmware on one controller, go to step 4a. To upgrade the firmware on more than one controller, go to step 4b. If you want to upgrade the firmware on all controllers, go to step 4c.
The following is the command syntax for upgrading the controller firmware, where "CONTROLLER_NUMBER" is the number of the controller whose firmware you want to upgrade:
A:\> AFU update /c "CONTROLLER_NUMBER"
4a. To upgrade the firmware on a single controller, type the following at the DOS prompt, replacing "CONTROLLER_NUMBER" with the number of the controller whose firmware you are upgrading:
A:\> AFU update /c "CONTROLLER_NUMBER"
To upgrade controller 0, for example, you would type the following:
A:\> AFU update /c 0
4b. To upgrade the firmware on multiple controllers, type the following at the DOS prompt, replacing "CONTROLLER_NUMBER_?" with the comma-separated list of the numbers of the controllers whose firmware you are updating:
A:\> AFU update /c "CONTROLLER_NUMBER_1", "CONTROLLER_NUMBER_2"
To upgrade controllers 0, 2, and 3 for example, you would type the following:
A:\> AFU update /c 0, 2, 3
4c. To upgrade the firmware on all controllers, type the following at the DOS prompt:
A:\> AFU update /c all
5. The AFU prompts you to put in the first of two firmware diskettes and press ENTER to continue. When it detects that the first diskette is in the drive, the AFU will read the part of the firmware image contained on the first diskette.
6. The AFU then tells you to (remove the first firmware diskette and) insert the second firmware diskette and press ENTER.
The AFU will read the second part of the flash image and then perform a checksum operation to verify that all the data was read correctly.
7. After the AFU reads the new flash image from both installation disks, it shuts down the controller and updates the firmware. *** PLEASE DO NOT REBOOT THE SYSTEM DURING THE UPDATE *** A verification of the operation follows. The results of each operation are displayed on the screen.
8. After the firmware installation is completed, the AFU exits. After the AFU exits, remove the firmware diskette and insert the bootable diskette that contains the AFU utility.
9. Type the following command, replacing "CONTROLLER_NUMBER(S)" with either the controller number or a comma-separated list of controller numbers:
A:\> AFU version /c "CONTROLLER_NUMBER(S)"
If you updated the firmware on controllers 0, 2, and 3, for example, you would type the following:
A:\> AFU version /c 0, 2, 3
10. The AFU displays the version information for the selected controllers. Verify that the version displayed is correct.
11. Remove the diskette from the floppy drive and reboot the system.
***NOTE: System must be rebooted after performing firmware update on PERC 3/Di before attempting any access to drives attached to the controller.
