DELL ANNOUNCES RECALL OF BATTERIES FOR NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS AUSTIN, Texas - May 3, 2001 - Dell is voluntarily recalling about 284,000 batteries supplied to Dell for use in some of its notebook computers. These batteries can overcharge, causing them to become very hot, release smoke and possibly catch fire. This recall involves the specified batteries only, not the computers themselves. Dell has received one customer report of a battery in a Dell computer overcharging in this manner, resulting in minor property damage. No injuries were reported. The recalled batteries were sold with the Dell Inspiron 5000 series of notebook computers, comprising both the Inspiron 5000 and Inspiron 5000e models. Dell shipped computers with these batteries directly to customers from Jan. 7, 2000 through March 21, 2001. Dell and its authorized service providers also sold the batteries separately during the same period. The batteries insert into the front left or front right of the notebook computer. "DELLTTM ," "MADE IN JAPAN," and "Inspiron 5000 Battery Module" are written on the top of the batteries. The battery's identification number is written on a small, colored sticker at the rear of the battery. Dell Inspiron 5000 series customers should remove the battery from their notebook computer and contact Dell immediately to determine if the battery is part of this recall. To contact Dell, customers can go to Dell's Web site at support.dell.com/BatteryRecall/I5000/Index.aspx . Customers unable to reach Dell's Web site can call Dell (see local phone numbers below) for battery-handling information, and to arrange safe return of the recalled battery. Customers will receive one replacement battery for each battery identified as subject to recall, and a second battery after they return the recalled battery. About Dell Dell Inc.
