Shut down the computer. Remove AC power from the computer. Turn the system upside down.
For the next three steps, refer to the corresponding numbers in the figure below:
To remove a battery from either battery bay, slide and hold the latch release on the bottom of the computer.
Carefully pull the battery out of the bay.
Locate and Record the Service Tag (code consisting of five to seven characters). You will need this Service Tag for inputting your battery information required below. The picture below will show you where to locate your Service Tag.
HINT: If you have more than one "Inspiron 5000 BATTERY MODULE", make sure that you check each one to determine whether or not it is subject to recall.
The Inspiron 5000 BATTERY MODULE Label looks like this. The P/N on this Label will be either 2127U or 083KV.
Locate the colored manufacturer label on the back of your battery (see example figure below):
Record the Manufacturer Code Letter that appears on your battery. This will be a P, S or M.
If the Manufacturer Code is NOT the letter "P", then the battery is not subject to recall.
If the letter "P" does appear, the battery is subject to recall and should be returned. Please complete the following instructions.
Locate on your battery, the DP/N or DS/N label. See example figure below:
Follow these instructions for entering the information for your battery in the table below:
- Enter the Computer's (5 to 7 character) Service Tag that you recorded in Step 4 above.
- Enter the DP/N or DS/N found on your battery (do not use the DP/N shown in the sample above). Click on the pull-down arrow in the first field and select the code that appears on your battery. Fill in remaining fields as shown on your battery's DP/N or DS/N label. Note: All fields must be complete.
- Enter the Manufacturer Code that you recorded in Step 6 above. Please click on the pull-drown arrow to choose one of the three choices: P, S or M, as it appears on your battery.

HINT: Repeat this process for all Inspiron 5000 Series batteries that you have.
